Overcharging?

My battery seems to be overcharging while I’m driving. If I turn the headlights on, it goes down to the 'normal'... but if I leave them off, within 20 minutes my battery light comes on indicating an over charge.

Is this just my voltage regulator on its way out in my alternator? If so, do I replace the alternator, or can I just replace the voltage regulator? I've ripped apart alternators before... but never on a viper...

Or... could this just be that my battery is toast? Reason I think it could be this, is because if I leave my headlights on for 30 mins without the car running, I have to boost it.

if its overchargeing or underchargeing-replace the battery with the alternater,you dont want to workover your new alternater,cheap insurance,u can piece together a alternater,but why,replace the complete unit unless u enjoy tinkering all the time

Ouch... $718 for an alternator.

Would it be wise to try a new battery first, or would that risk damaging the new battery?

How old is the Battery?
How are the connections?
Without a good connection or good battery the alternator will continue to charge to its max because it is not recieving a full charge indication from the battery. Since you indicate that the Alternator is charging more than likely it is not your problem.

take your batt somewhere (NAPA)and have them do a load test on it.I would guess that this is your problem!
