The previous owner left some touchup paint in my glovebox and it looks like it got a little too hot one day and exploded. Its a fair amount of touchup paint splattered in the back of the glovebox. Any tricks on how to get it out? I tried scraping it but its pretty solid and I didnt wanna press too ******* the plastic so that didnt do any good. TIA!

if the explosion isnt that bad and the paint is already dried, Maybe you could just sand the inside of the glove box to get the ruff stuff, and just repaint the glove box black. just a thought

Sanding and painting is the safe bet. Any paint remover, if used long enough will crack the plastic.

Another idea, if you do not care about the original look would be to line the inside of the box with something like a black felt or carpet, not so sure I would like that though.

Now this would be the true meaning of trimming the BOX when the carpet starts to look like the doors!!

I would go to autozone or checkers and buy a bedliner in a can, runs about 10 bucks, pull the glove box and just spray it. The inside of the glove box will have that nice texture and very durable.

I would do this, but without the fuzzy dice hanging from the mirror, it'd be an incomplete look :)

I like the sanding then painting idea. What grit sandpaper would be good? The paint is really dry and kinda thick.

If that paint is thick start off with 120 in the heavy areas, could even use a 80, but you risk damage. Go slow. Then slowly move to a 200 then 400 w/water. Follow up with some primer, 600 w/water then paint and clear. See results. I did not strip with paper but if I did that is what I would have done. I did do the primer and 600, paint and clear steps. The stripping was done with EZ-OFF. Do not think that is going to work with the touch up paint though which is why I recommend sand paper.

Did you paint that glovebox door yourself? How close to a match of a stock Gen 1 dash is the color?

Painted the whole dash. I have no idea how close it would be to the factory black, I HAD the grey fuzzy. I actaully do not like telling what I used to paint it. Simple Rust Oleum flat black and their flat clear.

My in progress pic from this winter.

Thanks for the info. I took my glovebox door to the 5 Star Dodge bodyshop to get them to repaint it b/c it had some scratches on it and when I last talked to them, they said they were having problems matching the black even w/the paintcode. I'm hoping they havent made it worse than it was.

Had a thought, does the factory black dash match the top part of the dash at the base of the windshield? If so my paint job is close but not perfect. I can take a pic of the color difference.

If you can take a pic of the difference, I'd really appreciate it. I have horrors as to what Dodge has done to my glovebox door. I'm gonna call tomorrow and see if they're done with it or not (theyve had it since last Thursday morning)

You may want to try placing a vial of black touch-up paint in the glovebox and let it explode also. Make sure it's in the same spot as the red touch-up was. :D

94RT/10Ohio: those pics are inspiring, I really think the black dash works well with the rest of the interior. I need to trim and re-glue my door panel carpet too...

do you have to remove the gauges to pull the dash? did you also paint the black rings around the gauges?

No, the gauges are not attached to the plastic part of the dash. As you can see from the pics, remove the kick boards, which presents screws to remove. Remove the radio bezel with some gental pressure, more screws behind that. I think there was a screw or two around the golve box door as well. Been a few months.

Once all the screws are removed all you have to do is pull the dash out. I say pull because there are clips along the top (5 of them I think). Start on one side and slowly begin pulling outward.

As for the door handle bezels. Two exposed screws. Then the retangular trim piece slides (which way once again I do not recall, but it slides forward or back) once you slide it enough it will come off. This will expose one more screw. Be careful removing the retangular piece. It has 4 tabs that are easily broken when sliding/pulling it out.

I acutally bought a beat up used dash on EBay. I was scared to use my original dash. Once I was done I sold my old dash :)

I agree that the black looks much better. It should have been like that from 1992! It flows well off the door panels. Oh, yes I did paint the bezels around the gauges. When I removed the old grey fuzzy paint the black around the bezels also was removed.

Chad, I will get the pic of the paint color difference tonight.

Thanks for the pic Lance. I went by the bodyshop this afternoon and they told me they finally got the paint to match. I'm gonna pick it up tomorrow AM. We'll see if their definition of "match" and mine are the same or not.
