Pete,
Interesting you should mention that - we had just a club member with a 2000 GTS who said his drivers door black vertical panel (the one with the sticker - whatever the heck its called) "melted" after a drive home from Charlotte 2 weeks ago. Tom Sessions is picking it up on the way back from Mid Ohio this weekend so we 'll have more info. Makes no sense that it should fail and it is really no where near the cat. Wonder what's going on. Please keep us posted and we'll do the same.

The exhaust either exits (Gen1) or turns back under the car (rear exit) right below that area. The wheelhouse liner and the rear quarter panel close the area in and the heat may stovepipe there aroud the door jamb.

Did you run the car pretty hard and then park it between other vehicles/trailers where the wind couldn't get to it to cool? Perhaps your left side cat is slightly blocked causing higher temps on that side. Have the upstream & downstream oxygen sensors checked against the right side. Also, compare the fuel injector long term adaptive strategy on the left and right banks.

Can't address the crease issue, but can comment on another issue with the panels. The panels on both sides of my '97 GTS have blistered, apparently from the heat. Thank god for the warranty.
