I am trying to install a MGW shifter knob, which seems like it should be really easy, but I am having trouble.

1. I can't break loose the factory shifter from the locking nut. It seems to be torqued on with an amazing amount of force. I applied as much pressure as I dare and am afraid I am going to damage something. Am I doing something wrong? I am using two wrenches; turning the nut counter clockwise and the shifter clockwise. Can't budge it.

2. Having failed to get the factory piece off, I can't get the boot back over the nut. Played with it for half an hour using small screwdriver and a tiny pair of needle nose pliers... no luck.

I have done my fair share of automotive work and can't believe I am stuck on something so simple. Anyone have any tips?

I placed a rag over mine and used a plumbers wrench to remove the knob counter clock wise.

Once the knob is removed the rest is easy peasy Japanese!

Ok... got it. It helps when you turn the nut the right way, lol. Removing the aluminum ring at the shifter base made it much easier to manipulate the boot back on as well.

Just took it for a test ride with the short shifter and love it. Much better than the factory "lever". Why didn't it come from the factory with a short shifter to begin with????

[/QUOTE] I think dodge's thinking is building a car that suites most people. Thats like saying why didnt it come from the factory with twinturbo's?. Not all people want a twinturbo or short shifter. DC builds a platform that most people find pleasing to drive. While keeping the cost down, .02

Remember righty tighty. But you have to look from the end you are moving. In this case visualize being on the trans looking up and rotate CCW.
