I'm thinking of having the rivet corrosion fixed on my side sills as well as getting them repainted. My question is can I leave the rivets out and weld up the holes in the aluminum. I am under the impression the side sill insulation is glued in. To be honest, the rivets are not doing anything anymore and I would like to eliminate them. My B&B mufflers seem to keep the insulation in place regardless of the rivets or glue.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

I just finished re-doing a set of Gen 1 side sills for my 97GTS. I heliarced all of the rivit holes closed, plus a couple of "rot" holes. You don't want the rivits or the stainless steel piece that comes with the Gen1 side sills. You can use an adhesive if you want, but you don't need to. I installed mine a number of miles ago and did not use any adhesive and have had no problem. If you have blisters, then strip the paint to the bare metal, and start back. You may also want to consider some sort of thermal wrap IN ADDITION to the factory heat insulation. :2tu:
