There has been a lot of conversation regarding the switch in manual transmission fluids from Dexron III to Syntorque. In order to understand whether the recommended switch is based on longevity issues or strictly as a way to minimize complaints of neutral gear rattle, I asked a rebuilder of manual transmissions for both street and racing his opinion.
He felt that ATF (Dexron III) filled transmissions shifted better, lasted longer and were in better shape on teardown vs. other heavier weighted lubricants (I assume Syntorque is heavier).
His suspicion was that the lighter Dexron fluid dropped metal particles quicker thereby maintaining a cleaner fluid flow. This was based on the cleanliness of a Dexron drain vs. the metalflake look of other type of oils.
Bottom line question for me is, which fluid will provide more durability and longer transmission life, Dexron or Syntorque? Neutral gear rattle is a non-issue for me. Longer transmission life and better shifting is what I'm after.
