I rented a yellow 95 in Vegas 5 years ago for a day. They did take measurements on the tread. The car had numerous wear marks on paint already. Got it up into low triple digits in the desert with nobody around. I mostly wanted to feel the acceleration when dounshifting on the highway. Was worth every penny and confirmed that I had to own one.
Renting is really the best way to test drive a Viper. You don't have a dealer or a seller there to ruin the experience and you can get a full day of living with the car.
