Here we go again ... another transmission broken on a 2006 Coupe with 12000mi. Unfortunately the car is American and is located in Canada. So I don't have any warranty on the transmission.

The transmission makes a lot of rattle in 5th gear when I apply load. The noise is the same as the idle rattle but it is much stronger. The rattle is also noticable in 6th but at a much lower rate. The gear can be engage easily and the tranny stays in gear.

The tranny will be unmounted this night and will be shipped for repare.

I already talked to my tranny specialist about the issue.
He is telling me that the "5th & 6th gear cluster is gone" and likely we will have to replace the output shaft. This is a $1500 job. I will have a final price once the tranny is opened. This guy has an extensive experience on this type of T56. He does a quality job.

However I have the impression that my tranny specialist overcharges me.

What might be this rattle noise in 5th gear and what parts should be replaced ?

Who sells "upgrade" parts for the T56 ?

Try some extensive searching for another transmission. You may get lucky, I did. I ended up with an upgrade as well.

:usa:

I agree. $1500 is too much for a repair.

Check this out:

Should be no more than $300-400 for your guy to do the swap, since he has alot of experience.

The problem in Canada is the price of the parts. Some parts are really expensive.
A shaft in the States is $300 in Canada it is $700.

I just ordered a clutch slave cylinder from Tator and it is 40% less expensives than at the cheapest local dealer in Montreal ... In addition he had the part. In Montreal I should had to wait 5-10 days !!!

I think we have a new trans on the shelf I may be able to give you a deal on if you need a stock one and want the factory correct transmission. I'm not at work right now (ruptured Achilles tendon Friday) but will try to help you through the deal via Email if you decide to go that way.

[email protected] if that is easier.

Thanks,
Mark

Some suggestions:

1) when you do the rebuild, put in shorter 5th and 6th ratios. I have .80 for 5th and .62 for 6th and they are fantastic. They make that tranmission a true 6 speed instead of a 4 speed with two ridiculous overdrives.

2) the best place to get the gears for the shorter 5th and 6th conversion is close to you: Rockland Standard Gear in Sloatsburg New York. Here is a link to their web-site:

I headed about Rockland too. I was down in N.Y. Friday and I cooked my tranny on Sunday :(

Anyhow my tranny is ready. It was a very good idea to have it inspected right away. My tranny guy told me that the issue was shimming .... The surgery on the tranny will cost me $350 but at least it will be perfectly torqued and adjusted.

By the way my tranny guy told me that the 2006 tranny that I had looked my stronger than the previous versions of the T56.

Meanwhile I bought a new tranny from Jon ...:)

What would we do without Jon and Tator ?!
