I'm curious about this. First, how theft froof is the factory stock viper? I realize a determined pro will probably succeed, but how about the average run of the mill punk who normally steals run of the mill cars? Second, are there any wires under the hood that can be easily removed and replaced by the owner as a secondary line of defense. The car alarm as always would be on, and it is my understanding that when it is on, opening the hood would trigger the alarm. Is the car thus disabled at that point? And third, what are some things any of you might recommend be done to both car and garage to prevent theift. This thread probably should be only on the members only discussion area.

I have Geico, a short temper and yellow wheels...I'll either be paid by Geico, catch the person and take care of it myself or the cops will spot the yellow wheels a mile away. They always spot them when I'm driving :D

the fact that if you locked your keys inside and announce it on this board, someone will pm you instructions on how to "get in"... I suspect it's not too hard. The thing is Vipers are not stolen much because you'll be spotted a mile away... more so with McVipers, unless the perp is smart enough to hide it behind a McDonalds. :D

I once did a search for stolen Vipers here and only found one thread. That's pretty good. Now go to the Honda forums and see how many get stolen. :D

The smart thing would be to hide it at *******. Cops would think it was me. Then again, when i get there for my "someone stole my Viper" wings and drink, I'd see it :D

You live in Oklahoma, how many car thiefs are there??:dunno: I live in FL, one of the crime capitals. I don't even worry about it. If it bothers you that much, sleep in the car every night.

Get a shop manual and look at the wiring diagrams. There are plenty of ways to design your own anti-theft device.

Remember though, the most secure is the one you tell no one about.

I actually have my own anti-theft sytem installed. Cost was about $5 and took under 5 mins to install and guaranteed to work. Any VIPER OWNERS/VCA members who want to know about it can PM me.

It would be hard to move stolen Viper parts as there aren't many sellers and most buyers are likely other Viper owners. For instance, if a McViper was stolen and we saw yellow rims on ebay the next week.....well one of us would likely notice and point it out on here. That would lead to the police tracing the seller and they've got someone involved in the theft. Also, it is way too hard to switch VIN tags on a Viper...there just aren't that many Vipers to make it easy.

Most car thieves go after stuff that is so common that's it's easy to move parts without anyone asking questions. Also, keeping a stolen Viper anywhere near your property will not be something you can keep quiet, so they don't want cars that people call someone else about.

Aaron

It's difficult to steal. The wireless alarm uses a rotating code that is constantly changing. When the FOB is pushed without the key in the ign you have to use the manual "emergency handle inside the car to get out. It seems that there'sno elec. to any systems I tried except the alarm so I'd guess that even if you tore the steering column out and played with the wiring, you'd need a batt. term. to get any voltage. Not the "reach under the dash and rip some wires" to start it with these cars.

I think our biggest problem is that the stupid thieves would wreck the car before they figured out they're too stupid to figure out how to steal it. I also don't worry. Although a smart tow truck driver opened his book and opened my door after the battery died ...

The average run of the mill punk will take your car if it's unattended with the keys in the egnition.
The pro'll tow your car if it's unattended weather you have the "I'm a doofas" steering bar on or whatever else.

Always keep an eye on it or lock it away.
