I have purchased a new GTS with 250 miles, (my second viper, my first was a high mile car when I bought it) how should I break in the car? I've always had my ideas, but I see in some of the classifieds here on VCA where guys say "broke in per VCA guidelines". I would like to hear what VCA guidlines are on break in.

Thanks so much.

Most will tell you to change the oil at 200 miles which I did. I also have the break-in procedures somewhere which I followed closely. Will look for and post if no one else beats me to it.

Here you go (enjoy the car)..

FROM Roy: "
Technical Service Bulletin
Group: Engine
Date: Feb 25, 2000
Subject: Replacement Engine Break-in Procedure
Models: 1992-2000 (SR) Viper Roadster/Coupe
Discussion: The following break-in procedure is suggested for any New Viper Engine.
Share this information with you customers as needed.
During the first 1000 miles (1610 km):
1. Avoid long periods of engine idling.
2. Wait until the engine has reached operating temperature before driving
enthusiastically.
3. Check the engine oil level at each fuel fill since a new engine may consume some oil
during the first few thousand miles (this is normal and not a sign of an engine problem).
4. Keep the vehicle speed below 70 mph (113 km/h).
5. Do not make any full throttle starts or full throttle accelerations.
6. Avoid driving at a constant engine rpm for long periods as follows:

. First 200 miles interval (322 km), light throttle run-ups shifting at a maximum of 2500
rpm.
. In addition, it is suggested to change the engine oil within the first 200 miles of engine
break-in.

. Second 200 miles interval (322 km), light throttle run-ups shifting at a maximum of
3500 rpm.

. Third 200 miles interval (322 km), light throttle run-ups shifting at a maximum of
4000 rpm.

. Fourth 200 miles interval (322 km), light throttle run-ups shifting at a maximum of
4500 rpm.

. Fifth 200 miles interval (322 km), light throttle run-ups shifting at a maximum of 5000
rpm.

Policy: Information Only"

This is NOT in the 2001 manual but is IS in the Spring 2000 issue of Viper Mag...page 36....in MY poinion, you should FOLLOW IT CLOSELY !!!

Just keep your wife away from the car if you have one. Wives don't follow break-in procedures very well.

So according to this you can't shift over 5k until AFTER ONE THOUSAND miles??? LOL!!!!

What if at 500 miles on the clock you rip the livin piss out of it, what's gonna happen?

I think I just read that Arrow after a fresh rebuild does 2 WOT runups on the dyno.

Viper Joe,

I kinda had the same thoughts as you.

On race cars we build a new motor or re-build a motor, we toss it on a dyno, "burn" it in at 1,500 to 2,000 RPM's for 10 min or so, run the valves, and then rip it wide open for 4 or 5 full dyno runs.

I was wondering if the V-10 break in is diffrent than a V-8 break in.

I kept seeing the "broke in according to VCA guidelines" in some of the VCA classifieds.

I do tend to think a V-10 is diffrent than a V-8. We can twist a V-8 up to 9,000 RPM's in a race. I bet if I tried to take even the best V-10 up to 9,000 RPM's for 300 to 400 miles, it would not last for the event.

I'd rather stay on the conseritive side with this GTS.

Above it says: "broke in according to VCA guidelines"

The strict guidelines that were posted by Roy were published in the Spring 2000 issue of Viper Magazine on page 36...as written by Herb Helbig of Team Viper.

When I picked up my "used" '01 GTS a month or so ago it had 146 miles on it. I believe Bill P. told me to run it something like up to 250 miles - 2500 rpm, 250-450 miles - 3500 rpm, 450-650 - 4500 rpm, and so on. At least thats what I'm doing. I will say that I've occasionally bumped it to 4500 rpm (340 miles on it now) but only when getting on the highway for a quick 2 mile 70 mph run.
