What\'s the rubber diaphram in clutch master for?

About a year ago I had fun doing a complete flush of the hydraulics for the clutch system, (97 GTS). A year later, the fluid in the reservoir is black again. It looks to me like this is coming from the black diaphram in there disintegrating... So what's the diaphragm for, and does it need to be replaced? Is this what causes the fluid to turn black?

Getting the air out of the system by yourself is a real bltch. I use a pressure bleeder, and wedge the clutch pedal to the floor with a piece of wood, then climb under the car, unscrew then tighten the bleeder. Repeat 5 times. Get covered in brake fluid. Swear lots. I'd like not to have to do this every year!
