Yep! The SRT does have a rev limiter. Great protection. Hit it a time or two in the heat of the moment...No rev protection on downshift.

SRT has a shift light on the dash that lights up red as it approaches the redline to prompt an upshift.

If you exceed the maximum recommended revs the limiter will be activated to protect the engine.

Yup I also have hit the limiter a time or two in the heat of the moment. Good thing for the limiter that is for sure. Dang those crotch rockets. :D

The first time you hit it you swear you broke something. After the Paxton I put in a shift light, too easy to hit the limiter in both first and second, 3.33 gears also.

It's really important, just has been mentioned in this post, there is NO rev limiter on downshifting! If you happen to miss a gear, and let out on the clutch and over rev, you will probably have internal damage of some kind. Happened to a tech that took my car for a test drive (my old 94, S/C's car), shifted 2nd to first, let the clutch out, the back end came around and he went 261 ft. into the desert off the freeway, and blew the engine and the S/C because of no rev limiter!!!! BEWARE!!!! Besides that my car was totaled after running over some small boulders and hitting a mesquite tree!!!

stupid question time...I've hit the redline in my car before, but never heard anything like a shotgun blast, making me believe I never hit the rev limiter? Is the rev limiter at higher RPM than the redline?

Not to sound or appear rude, but the entire purpose of a rev limiter is to keep you from over revving the motor, so consequently hitting it on upshift keeps the motor from doing exactly that. Hitting the rev limiter on an upshift is not going to hurt the engine in the least, though the best area to shift is seen around the 5600-5700 range on the Gen I through Gen III models. There are times at an autocross or on a road course, where taking the car to redline/rev-limited is advantageous for the best time --- instead of making an additional shift.

...........but , as stated, there is no protection on a missed down shift.

Chad, i think the rev limiter on the gen2's is at 7100 rpm's if i remember correctly from the first time i was on a dyno. (never did that again)

If you hit the rev limiter in a stock Gen III, you'll know it. All power generatin stops, quite abruptly. I just hit it last week.

I've heard several versions of when the rev limiter kicks in. I think it's 6050 rpm on a Gen III stocker.

Problem is that the rev limiter in my built Paxton motor is set at 6600 rpm, my GTS is also set at 6600 rpm, so when I drive the SRTC (stocker), I occaisionally touch the rev limiter.

How dangerous is it to redline before shifting? Does the srt have rev limiter?

While pushing it at the track, I've hit the rev limiter twice in my 04. All power shuts down and then comes back at about 4500 - 5000 RPM. Quite scary the first time but no apparent damage.

On my first trip to the track, my desire exceeded my skill. I missed a speed shift going 3rd to 4th and ended up in 2nd. No rev limiter to save me. Fortunately, I felt it as the clutch was coming out and saved it but still the RPMs went well north of the red line. No apparent damage done and I learned a lesson. Following that, I did lots or practice at slower speeds. I've had it at the track twice since then and get it to 140 MPH in 4th.

Thanks for the replies. Still getting use to the car. I'll be careful on the down shift. :)

Although I ve only hit it twice, the rev limiter on my Ducati almost throws me over the handlebars. I haven t had the Viper that high. What happened to the old rev limiters that just stuttered the power until you shifted? :dunno:

I do beleive that the limiter is a fuel shutoff. I don't see any issues with blowing up the motor by hitting it. I am sure the factory has it set at a point for that not to happen. I have ht in in the heat of battle and the only thing that happened is I lost........ It just takes practice and a good ear to take it to the limiter without hitting it.

Isn't there something called a skip shift eliminator to stop you from shifting from 4th to 2nd?

At low RPM it forces you to shift from 1st to 4th, skipping 2nd. Hence the name, skip shift...

Does anyone know why this "feature" is present? I can't think of a single good reason. if the RPM's are too low for 2nd, aren't they WAY too low for 4th?

When I first got my Viper I thought there was something wrong with it because of this "feature".
