Went for a few hundred mile cruise today in my 96 Twin Turbo GTS today and all was great until I got off the highway and stuck in traffic, temp shot up to the red mark in about 3 minutes. I pulled over immediatly and shut it down. Popped the hood and after the rad stopped its small hissing sound I turned the key to the on position and temp gauge in the 215 range I cranked it on with heater blowing. Sure enough the electric fan was not turning. Fuses are all okay. Plugs seem to be connected 100%. Has anyone had one of these go out on them? Can I replace just the motor or do I need a entire new unit? Any idea of a good place to get one of these? It was upgraded to the 99-02 style when the bigger rad was installed at Heffner with the twins.

See pic; right by the brake booster, above the DS footwell. Where the Ford relay is on my car - part of my custom fan wiring - that is the on-off relay. There is also a hi-lo relay. Either could be bad, look at the legend under the sanp-on cover for which is which. Also look carfelly at the pins and down in the socket for evidence of burning.

Relay looks brand new, no signs of burns or anything. Will replace just in case. Fuse was A okay as well.

UPDATE:

Swapped known good relays from my RT with the GTS. Still no movement from the Rad Fan. Any other ideas before I pull the entire assembly?

It could certainly be the sensor bad on the head. It is $50 and easy to change. Would not be the first one to go bad. Doing it cold, you'll lose minimal coolant.

See if you can jumper the fan with a battery charger to make sure it works. Also if you have the wiring diagrams on your car check the power to the factory fan on-off relay. It should have power to the relay main side regardless of the coolant temp.

This is of course best done with the help of a good set of wiring diagrams. I have them on my '01 they may be the same for the cooling system for '96 if you need them.

Tell you the truth electrical diagnostics is new to me but if you have diagrams and can send out a brief description on how to proceed I can do it. Would appreciate the help!
