Times are changing I guess folks. Last year, I paid a little over $600 for my CA vehicle registration. This year, I paid $405. Over $200 difference in just 1 year? I am not complaining but just wondering what the rest of you California guys are paying. I have a 2006 SRT10 Convertible.

Gov Brown tried to stop the license and registration fees from reverting back to lower levels. I am glad he was unsuccessful. Should get my renewal soon, but am expecting mid 400s

Ouch! FL tags are about $40 .. They used to be lower but state raised all fees a couple years back [no income tax either]. $600!!!! Another reason I'm glad I don't live in CA.

Ghoust, where you been?? You live in the epicenter of our govenor's crying machine. "If we don't extend the taxes the state will collaspe!" Brown couldn't get the legislature to extend all the "temporary taxes" so they expired at the end of June. Along with the registration decrease, sales taxes went down 1/2% and the income tax went back to 9.05% from 9.55%. Enjoy your windfall and do more upgrades to your viper! Mike

NJ is $46.50 per car, plus a $2.00 convenience fee to renew online....plus $6.00/year for my driver's license = $151.50 for my Viper, BMW and Mercedes....and people ask me in California: "Why do you have NJ plates?".

Regards,
Aaron

Be glad you don't live in Minnesota as well. My renewal this year was $880. But hey, it's gone down $200 since '09!!

In the old days in MN they were based on weight and age and actually dropped to about $15 if the car was old enough. But then the tax mongers decided to tax based on value and they have their own "book" ... And yes I am very glad I don't live there. Besides the socialist govt and outrageous taxes, it's too damned cold for me.

Just wondering how these other states make their cash. I can't imagine you don't get screwed one way or another. We don't pay property taxes on cars, and except for a few rare circumstances we don't pay tolls. Yes our state is broke..............

Not so much a matter of how much cash in, but rather how much spending / cash out. Simply the others don't spend as much, therefore no need for as much cash in. CA is a disaster when it comes to spending and that's why you're broke. Outrageous taxes and regulations are driving your business out so less income there as well.

1.25% times the base value of the vehicle. Can you say "luxury tax"? The one good thing Jesse Ventura did when he was Governor was to change the yearly vehicle tax...err, license renewal to a much more reasonable and fair structure. If that was still in effect, my renewal would have been $199. However, it reverted back to the old way in Sept. of '08 and was very much "under the radar". When I paid my sales tax and registration tax in '09 after purchasing the car, I nearly went postal. When the car is 10 years old, the renewal is $35. So I guess I have that to look forward to. :(

The really annoying part is that even if it was $10 they will waste it or give it to someone to buy a vote.

Holy $hit. $400-$1600 for registration is crazy. I never knew how blessed we are here in Texas; $65 for cars (i.e. Viper), and $75 for trucks (i.e my SUV).

Tom,

No offense, but they are not just talking about registration fees, and I know you aren't talking about your property taxes, as I just got done paying $1200. Registration, taxes, license fees are some of the highest in the Country in Nebraska. Part of a solvent government, maybe, but more likely that there are only 1.8 million people in the whole State. We are in the top 5 to own a car, as unlike many States we have property taxes to pay in addition.

I agree with Bill P. Just received my tax statement and it is approx. $1200 in Nebraska for my 08 Viper.

Nebraska's taxes may be high, but NE is in much better shape financially than most states due to the tax structure. This is not saying that there are no short falls along the way. Yes, there is room for spending improvements.

We can complain all we want, but we are fortunate to have the system in place as it exist today considering today's economy. (even though I don't like paying high taxes.)

pass the bill....pass the bill....pass the bill :lmao:

He said it 18 times during his campaign speech Thursday and nobody even has a bill to pass yet including him... He really plays to the lowest denomination and his shoe lickers keep covering for his insults and embarrassing record.

Here's what I pay in Arkansas:

BMW54i0i = $25.25
2008 Viper ACR = $52.25 (would be less; but those are vanity plates)
2009 ZR1 = $25.25
2010 GMC Sierra: $3.00 (retired military can register one vehicle per year for $3.00)

Of course, I have to pay property taxes on the vehicles separately and that runs about $1800 per year for all four
