gen V RPM at 70 MPH?

Just wondering what does the Gen V Rev at when doing 70 MPH in 6th gear.

I remember how long the 6th gear was in my 2006 Coupe which revved at about 1400 or so at about 70 for highway cruising and always thought it was too long a gear.

do you think it is geared well for highway cruising with the new 3.55 rear?

completely different now. I think its around 2200 now. I actually wish a bit lower, but designed to get top speed in 6th now, so very usable gear.

That seems a bit high for cruising at highway speeds. I just did some quick math on the Z06 and at 70mph it would be about 1500 rpm which seems about right.

I heard the 2015 gears will changes slightly, anyone know how much? I don't track my cars so the top-speed 6th gear is not that important to me.

Trying to decide on a Viper or Z06 in the spring. Love both cars and have owned 2 vipers and 4 Vettes in the past. Any feedback is appreciated.

I am not your typical viper owner. I drive the speed limit and toodle around. I hardly ever pass anybody but get passed all the time. I have put almost 7000 miles on the car since purchase in January, so I use it a lot. My commute to work is very short and use it most days unless storming. My SUV supposed to be daily stays parked a lot because the viper is so enjoyable. I also come from a 2006 Gen 3. Even at the speed limit, it's a very fun car to drive, far more than the 2006.

I have no experience with a C7 or 6 (last vette was C5). I am turned off the C7Z by all the plastic looking sticky-out parts. It's too transformer looking for my taste. I also don't like the 4 tail pipes. No doubt it will be an amazing vehicle, but once all the C7z clones appear, it will look like just another corvette. The Gen 5 is not perfect looking either from every angle but pleases me much more. The interior is a huge improvement from the 2006 in terms of technology and refinement.

Actually, I think closer to 2000 RTM for 70mph in 6th. Will agree the Gen5 is much more enjoyable to drive than my Gen3 (other than not being a conv). Also agree on the C7 comments, just not a good look for me, but I suspect a better daily driver.

I believe some of the first 2010 cars had the earlier (.74/.50) gear sets.


The current 5th and 6th gear are close to ideal for most. They could go back to the old 0.5, 6th gear ratio, that would be the easiest for them. For information purposes, you cannot buy the MOPAR T6060 gear sets, if your tranny goes bad, it is a complete replacement.


Thanks Jack B, that confirms 05's updated estimate. Anyone know how the 2015 gearing will change?

It seems close, however, if I wot shift at 6k the rpms drop approx 1000 and that is in a good area of the power curve.

I'm curious why they made the 3rd and 4th gear on our Gen V's so close together in terms of revs. They seem almost redundant.

The 2015 Viper is getting a revised sixth gear in the GT and GTS trim models only to reduce engine noise on the highway. I think that means a .5 sixth gear ratio for those two trim models.

Are you sure about the 2010's second gear ratio as listed in the chart? I was not aware of a change.....thought it was the same as the 2008 to 2009 Gen 4.

Highway cruising is NOT well in the Gen V, drone-wise. Car drones between the lower to mid 2000 RPM range so I either stay below 65MPH which is difficult to do or go faster than 80 to avoid the drone, or drop down to 5th. I'm thinking of going to 3.73 rear end gears to not only wake up the car in the lower RPM's but also to move out of the drone region between 70 and 80 MPH.

You would think it would be simple to tune a muffler so that the cruise rpm would be quieter.


Whatever it is, it goes away once the engine reaches 3000 RPM, or is much less if kept under 2200 RPM or thereabout.
