I have found a perfect combination for me and my driving style. I do some drag, some auto-X, but mainly my car is a fun street car and the new gearing I had installed is right on the money...

Car is a GTS and has an 18/19 combo of the GEN III 10 spokes with OE tires. I added a 3.45 rear gearset and couldn't be happier.

The slow speed "bucking" is completely gone, but it doesn't feel so "geared" that I fly throught the RPM band too fast, but it definately pulls stronger.

This is also giving me a speedometer error of about 4%. At 70mph on the speedo I am showing 68.2-68.4 on my GPS. Fifth and Sixth gear are much better on the highway and "cruising around" at 40-45 in town is still fine in 3rd gear, just at a better place in my powerband.

So, no bucking, much better "pull" through the gears, better powerband placement in town, useable 5th and 6th gears on the highway and no real speedometer change (so no re-calibration) is what I have now with a 3.45 and 18/19 wheel combo...

Just thought I would share for those looking to change out those 3.07's...

Where did you find the 3.45 gears? Another Viper owner at my work recommends that ratio but it seems most of the owners on here are stuck on the 3.55 gear bandwagon.

3:45s here as well. Call Devin at Unitrax. I bought the entire assembly a few years ago. It's plug and play then. Just over 2 hours with a rack and air tools, although the Wizard has shared that some cars can take much longer due to parts not coming off as easily.

The only draw back to a 3:45 or 3:55 or any of the lower geared sets is that they run out of steam at 125 or so--unless you're going to bounce it off the rev limiter. Then you're in OD. On the flip side, how often do you get above 125? There's no such thing as perfect. There are tradeoff for every different gear set. I find the 3:45 set a good one for the 95%+ street driving we do. Had a 3:33 been available, I may have gone with it.

Same as steve - these are Unitrax gears. With my mildly modded GTS, 125 would be perfect through the 1/4 and other than that, Hallett (roadcourse) or auto-X never see these speeds...

Useful info. I will be doing a gear change shortly as well and have no idea which gears to go to. I have heard that 3.55's are the gears to have but I have also heard that 3.45's are pretty good as well. I will probably go with the 3.45's.

I think 3.45 or 3.55 is close enough that you are really not going to see much diference between the two. That is one of the must have mods for when I get a Viper. The other is Corsa exhaust.

No I have the perfect gearing. Stock height 18" tires with 3.55s so rear is way shorter than you, BUT the magic I have is shorter 5th and 6th gears (.80 and .64 as opposed to stock .74 and .50). The short rear gears allow me to fully utilize sticky tires, plus working with the short 5th and 6th puts my car right at 200 mph @ 6,000 rpm (which puts the probably actual top speed around 180 right at the peak of the power band in 6th).

Obviously a stupid question but how did you get the lower 5th and 6th gear? Change the tranny or just changed the gears in the same tranny? I am sure it made 5th and 6th much more usable.

What I am saying is perfect, is not simply going to this gear ratio, but the benefit (for me) of it not being TOO short and with my 19" rear tires, having a correct speedo (the gears offset the 18-19 wheel change.) without recalibrating anything. Also, with my power, I'm in my powerband in 4th on the 1/4 and 5th and 6th gear are still useable...

I blew up my first/second gears and had the tranny rebuilt. The tech is an enthusiast and has done hundreds of Tremecs so I told him I had heard of shorter 5th and 6th gears being available. He found them at I believe Rockland Gear (some place in NY for sure that rebuilds racing versions of Tremecs) and once he got the gears he had to turn down the appropriate shaft(s) a few thousands and now I have nice linear steps in ratios from first through sixth. With the 3:55s and the shorter 5th and 6th this is the way the car should have come from the factory. Tech tells me that the pieces needed are sourced from an Aston Martin version of the tranny. Doing the new 5th and 6th cost me exactly $1,000 more than the standard rebuild.
