It's about 7:15 pm, I'm coming back from Santa Monica. I'm driving my daily ******, a 2006 Mustang GT, grey with a big Nurburgring sticker on the back. (Not because my Mustang is any Ring King, but just because I had a great time there, and the sticker is a momento)

It's dark out, and cars in my rearview mirror are just vague outlines, in a sea of headlights.
I'm in the fast lane as usual. Right behind me, I see a low car, with wideset foglights. I think, "Hey, is that a Viper?" I tilt my head side to side, and happen to catch the sillouette of the rear view mirrors. They look big, and awkward, like ears on a Howdy Doody dummy. I think, that's no Viper!

We keep driving this way for a bit, through Huntington Beach.

Then this car accelerates towards the slow lane, and gets off at Magnolia. As it passes ahead to my right, I see how low it is, how wide it is, how curvy it is. Now it's off to my side, partially illuminated by the headlights of surrounding cars, and there is just enough light to see it's one of those crazy, exciting looking GTS's. Black, (with stripes, I think) Damm, that car looks awesome! Such a rare, wild animal! Car's headlights jealously play off the curve of the front fenders, the deep side scallop, the upturned tail. It's a treat to see an exciting shape, breaking up the dullness of my long slog homeward. Then the driver gets off the freeway, and my few moments of visual-car-**** ecstasy fleet by, and are gone. The non-descript world of hum-drum automotive shapes once again envelope me, in a Camry-esque depression.

I should have known by the headlight/foglight arrangement, that it was a GTS. But then again, I'm never in front of one, I'm always at the wheel of mine! Mines a 2001 GTS, Saphire/silver stripes. Nice to see one being driven, and to be reminded how cool it looks from the outside, driving down the freeway. Realize that when you drive your GTS, you are brightening up the world around you, bringing joy to sad souls, which I hope counts for my charitible contribution to others!

Was that GTS owner anybody on this forum?

Hey Vic,
We are 2 miles from Santa Monica, come by our shop. There are always 10 or 15 Vipers on hand!

I've had a similar experience. I've owned my GTS for 6 years and have seen plenty of others at events; but very, very rarely out in the wild. A few months ago I was in my Jeep and saw one coming down a rural 2-lane highway towards me in the same colors as mine. I was just blown away by how impressive it looked ! I get thumbs up a lot on the highway; but, you really do forget how rare and stunning the car is when you live with it for a long time. You can't buy a better looking car, just a different looking one.

Howdy Doody ears... ha! :lmao: The side view mirrors are the one body part that I would change in a heartbeat. If I ever run out of things to do, I'm doing the GEN3 mirror swap.

Oh man, I saw a blue with white stripes GTS back in Mid-December riding down Sawmill Rd. in Dublin, OH........The day was really grey all over but it was fairly warm. That Viper stuck out in a great way!
I see so many in pictures that it's easy to forget just how much more stunning they are in person!

Dude, you should be a writer. No BS.

Thank you kindly, that means a lot to me.

I do write technical articles for my elevator company. They are very good for fighting bouts of insomnia.

Vic, very well written, bro!

I had a similar experience back in '98-99. I was in my '85 Cutlass Supreme, (307 V8 (Last pushrod Olds V8) Edelbrock intake, modded Q-Jet, Hedman hedders, dual exhaust, B&M shift kit. It was no 455, but I had some fun... :D ) Anyway, I was heading to my new home in Rockland County from Brooklyn. Going across the Tappan Zee, I spot what I think is a B/W GTS about 100' in front of me! I thread through to get next to him, (In the right lane, oddly enough) I think it was an Indy Pace Car model. I tap my horn twice & give him a smile & :2tu: .

He smiled & waved, then downshifted so I could HEAR IT... Gone! :omg: Someday....:drive:

A few weeks later, I'm back on the TZ & I think I see him again... It was a Neon R/T! Not a bad car at all, but hardly a Viper!

I've had my B/W for 7 years or so and have done quite a few club runs, shows etc. It just NEVER gets old seeing one in motion out on the streets and highways. I was in my orange car following Plum in his silver GTS last summer and really enjoyed watching all of the reactions and behaviors of the other cars on the road. When you're behind the wheel of your viper, you only catch a fraction of the antics. Fun stuff... :D

very well said! i always catch people trying to take pics with their phones in their side mirrors, or the kids turning around on their seats to get a pic. funny how some try to be sly about pics, and others just hang right out the window! haha

I do write technical articles for my elevator company.

You must have the easiest job in the company.

Vic's Elevator Compay
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Section a) i
Each button number must correspond with the floor or level the elevator stops at.

Signature

Is that about it Vic? :D
Just joking with ya buddy.

Hah ha, that made me laugh out loud! It was like, "Section 1", then, "The End"! Hah hah hah!

I'll tell you everything I know. (I got it all down on this 3 x 5 card)

On Friday, I started out with circuit board troubleshooting and component repair, and ended the day by removing a 1,760 pound motor with a hoist and a beam trolley. The elevator trade is a strange animal, among the building trades. Widely varied. We never stop learning.

Nicely written.

Seeing a lion in the zoo or shark in a tank is one thing. In the wild is a sight to see

Congrats! You're the 16 billionth! :)

My friends' dad is a geologist. I thought I would be uniquely funny, if I asked him if he "dug" his hobby.
I wasn't.

One of the reasons I like meeting up with other Viper owners... so I can stare at other Vipers as you cruise down the highway. The GTS is just a gorgeous work of art...
