been running a V1 since plumcrazy let me use his when I picked up the viper. ordered it the day I got home and sent his back. use it in my daily truck, my viper and installing a hardwire in my dad's suburban. we love it. saved us numerous times, as stated, it isn't a cop detector, use your brain.

I'm not saying that laser/radar detectors don't help! When a cop is hiding behind a concrete column or bush and you're alone on the road,no matter what detector you have you get busted.

Radar, yes. Laser detector, yes. Laser detector WITH jammers/shifters, usually not.
Some brands of shifter work better than others, sometimes you might still get busted. The point of the shifters is like stated before.
If you only have a laser detector, you are busted as soon as it goes off, due to the beam being so narrow, your detector will not pick it up unless it's being shot directly at you. At that point, all the detector did for you was let you know that the cop will be pulling you over shortly.
If you have a laser detector AND quality jammers/shifters, you detector goes off letting you know that you just got "hit", your jammers/shifters send the signal a different direction and the cop gets an "error" message (or just no reading) on his gun. Since you know you got "hit", you slow down to the proper speed very quickly. Good to go.
I honestly love the fact that more and more state troopers near me are going to laser. If you get hit with "pop" radar or your the only car out there and he hits just you with radar, you're busted. No jamming/shifting of radar.

To the OP, V1 and the Passport 9500 are both great detectors and either will work good. I personally like the 9500 because it's easy to install the laser shifters later down the road and have them interlocked with one another.

I have the Passport 9500ix and today the locals have a new toy, a Laser gun, I was running 70 in a 65 when it went off and he was pointed right at me! My detector was making this new sound I had never heard before and when I looked up at the display and it said "Laser" I was thinking *** when I looked out the pax window and the CHP was parked on the onramp standing beside his cruiser with his new toy in hand.:omg: Just glad I wasn't running any faster, I would have gotten a ticket for sure! I'm not running laser shifters....yet! Seriously thinking about it now though.:D

Jamming radar is illegal. "Shifting" laser signals is not.
The laser "jammers" on the market (and that I have) are passive devices that shift the laser signal shot at you, away in a different direction instead of back to the cop's laser gun.
They have saved my ass quite a few times, because you're right, by the time your laser detector goes off, you've already been tagged.

Where can I get this shifting equipment?:2tu: I use V1 in my Vipers and Beltronics RX65 pro in my other cars.:D

I My detector was making this new sound I had never heard before and when I looked up at the display and it said "Laser"

You must have s,,,,,t your pants when that rapid beep sounded, haha.:rolaugh:I ran into these laser traps [ doing the speed limit at those times,
lucky me] and my 9500ix has a female voice also saying 'laser alert' three times!
Get the shifters and drive by that same spot 10 over and let us know how it works.

Not to hijack the thread, but where were you at the time? I'm trying to get a sense of where laser is used in NorCal. Especially curious about what CHP uses in the Stockton/Manteca to Calaveras county area...

One thing's for sure: we're driving cars that will always get attention, for better or worse.

I need to buy a new Radar Detector right away.......MY old one bit the dust and I do not know what is the best, most liked, effective Detector that you guys reccommend????? Your recomendation is what I am going to go by and buy today or tommorrow......input please......Thanks :eater: :dunno:

I want to thank everyone for your input on the Radar Detectors........It was a very hard decision but I went with Passport 6500ix.........over $500 plus after tax.....I like the alert it gives letting you know that the next intersection has Cameras installed and it filters out false signals pretty much.......after I have it awhile I will know if I think I made the right choice........The V1 was Very tempting after all your remarks about it........The arrows sounds nice......Hope I didn't waste my money on the wrong one........THANKS everyone.........:2tu: :dunno: :drive: :drive:

9500 makes a lot of sense if you live in a densely populated area and/ or your highways are cutting right through cities. Im sure the arrows are great on the open road, but filtering out the same false alarms you drive by every day is key IMO. I live with my 9500 every day right outside nyc... The range saves the tickets the gps saves the sanity.

Also, on most Escorts, you can change the display to "pro" and it will show multiple rader signals at once. That way, you still have the "bogey counter" of the V1. It doesn't just show a number, but once you have it set that way for a little while, a glance is all you'll need to know how many radars are running. Can't do anything about the arrows though.

These "devices" would only be useful if you were breaking the law.

Are you guys driving over the legal speed limit.....:nono:.

I use the ****** 9500 and love it. I've used a V1 a couple of years ago and you do need the arrows because of all the false alarms. I haven't run the new V1, hopefully they cleaned up the filtering so you don't get so many false alarms.

The range on the ****** is freaky, I've never had it light up Ka band and it not being a CHP when driving on the hiway.

I use the radar detector more when towing a heavy trailer, the speed limit in Calif is only 55 mph when towing. I always keep it below 65 mph, but the most useful thing is with the Escorts range, if it signals I know to start giving myself room from other idiots on the road since they all slam on the brakes when they see a cop causing mini traffic jams on the hiway. The extra room is nice when towing a 30' RV since traffic sometimes comes to a near standstill.

In NorCal the CHP sits under the overpasses from about Vallejo to the causeway in Davis on I-80....Laser is the newest threat. Luckily, I think it can only be used from a stationary position. But, without a laser shifter/blocker, if he hits you, you're done.

Cheers,
George

So far I have been lucky with laser. When it goes off I have been hit 2-3-4x more of course at a lower speed. For some reason the officers don't bust you on the first hit. They have always taken another shot then another. They love the toy but seem in all cases to take at least one more confirmation shot and they get you at a lower speed and forget about it. Yes a newly updated V1 . Remember they can hit you again after pass so get the brakes lit up before you pass them.
Last season on the way to the mopar nats. No warning no nothing. Wrote an 81 in a 65 which I was happy to accept without question. I was traveling much quicker than 81 and had no problem paying a fine for a much lower speed than what I was going. Just glad he didn't bother to use his radar gun. My wife and I had a good laugh about it and I was almost tempted to ask him to add some more MPH. 81 in a 65 is embarasing in a Viper. GTS Bruce

Detector did not go off

I was driving down the Beltway 8 this morning and up ahead I saw two constables on the side of the road where they typically are just south of the Westpark Tollway. I was following a car at a reasonable distance, and my radar detector (****** 9500 ix) was not on alert/did not go off. As we approached the cops one flipped his lights on and pulled the car in front of me over (phew). Why did my radar detector not go off? Do the cops have radar that is not detectable by my ******?

Well, I have laser detector on the ******. And typically I see the cop standing next to the car aiming the laser like a rifle. But I can't say for certain. Just nothing went off at all. I was wondering if the cop has something we/I don't know about or if he was bluffing, if you know what I mean.

The cop must have been using laser that's focusing on an extremely small area of the car like your licence plate. Most radar detectors are best installed high, close to the visors but the ****** 9500ix is better to be mounted low to be closer to the lic plate to detect Lidar. I have mine mounted on the dashboard. Best solution against laser would be having sensors behind the front grille.Know some ferrari guys having two sensors behind the front fascia and one behind the rear licence plate area.

Thanks for the tip on mounting position. I have mine mounted below the rearview mirror. Will it still be as effective mounted on the dash?

The 9500ix is pretty sensitive to detect other bands as well, having it on the dash of my 99 GTS. Kept me ticket free for over two years.
My policeman friend told me they aim at the plate with laser on.

They have to have a very flat, reflective surface for the laser to bounce back to them correctly. Basically, they always aim at the front plate or headlights. If you were behind a car and they hit him with laser, yours probably wouldn't pick it up because it's such a small beam and it went right back to them off the car in front of you.
As far as mounting locations, it's trade off. High is better for radar detection (longer range anyway), low is better for laser.

Thanks. Agree with tradeoff. I just wasn't convinced he had laser since I did not see him standing by the car. Maybe they have better way to do it and still get to sit in the warmth and drink coffee and eat donuts :)

I would not use anything other than a V1. I used to have an ****** and did a side by side comparison and the v1 consistently alerted me first
