Tricking the Mass Airflow sensor//voltage resistance

Viper's don't have a mass air flow sensor. The CPU monitors the Manifold Pressure, and looks at the RPM to make guess (from pre-programmed tables) of the amount of air that is entering the engine. In addition, the throttle position and air temperature are also measured, to help estimate...

How to determine throttle body size?

On my 97 GTS I used a set of calipers to measure the inside diameter of the throat before the butterfly valve. It measured 60mm which I think is stock for these cars. You can see the throat is machined to this diameter, as the machined surface looks different from the cast surface.

    Be Careful Driving The Viper!!

Where in Plano Texas was this, and what was the cause of the accident? I seems amazing that the occupants survived. It is very sad that it does not look like the car survived.

How much coolant does this thing hold...

Steve, When removing my radiator (on my 97 GTS), I did a complete drain of the system, as best I could with the engine in the car. When refilling it took about 3.2 gallons. The last 0.2 gallons were added over several days, burping the air out of the system. I also had a set of the Silicone...

    need 5pt harness

You know I really want to know where this "two year" thing came from. Sounds to me like the result of lobbying and legislation from the belt manufactures. Think about it. Seat belts in daily driven cars don't need to be replaced every two years, or even every ten years. The material that the...

    need 5pt harness

The real point here is that AGE is not a good indication of the condition of seat belts. I'm sure that you would agree that there are plenty of two year old harnesses that are shot, while I'm sure that you could also find some 10 year old ones that are still as good as new. The Darwinian thing...

    need 5pt harness

Hey Fred, Just curious: perhaps you advocate replacing the harnesses every time you replace your brake pads... I mean, what's your life worth? Come to think of it, maybe to be on the really safe side I should replace the whole car after each DE. I've heard of wheels and steering racks...

Former Porschephile now New Viper owner - oh yeah

Artman, Congrats on your new purchase!!! I too used to be a porschephile. (Six 911's: Still own a '89 930 (911 Turbo), and a factory wide body '87 911 cabriolet- but not for long!) Did you leave Porsche for the same reasons as me? (Disgust for the SUV that they are producing, and the 911...

I think I am the happiest person in the world.

Congrats!!! The first few days of driving were the most amazing for me too. I had to wait 6 weeks after I purchased mine before I got to drive it... After I started up that engine and drove it around, I was glowing and besides myself too. (I bought my car wrecked, and had to do quite a bit of...

Progress on restoring 97 GTS/ Pictures

Several people have asked me the cost details of the re-build: The work that has been subbed out for the side rocker damage came to about $2.0K I had the hood repaired by a fiberglass God who builds composite airplanes for about $2.2K Many other parts that I have needed (i.e., side sills...

Progress on restoring 97 GTS/ Pictures

Richard (Viperrick), I bought the car damaged, and not running (the computer was smashed, and the front brakes were locked up). It was a repo from a bank, and I took a pretty big risk buying it. After I bought it the frame was measured with a Shark system, and was found to be with in +/- 1.0...

Progress on restoring 97 GTS/ Pictures

Hello everyone. A while ago I posted some ugly pictures of my damaged Viper. I finally got the hood back from the fiber glass guy, and have trial fit everything. This week it goes in to be painted. I'm thinking either the original blue/white color, or perhaps Viper Yellow/Black stripes...

    Mixing Pilot SX and Sports

There are actually some factual reasons why usually it is not a good idea to mix different types of tires on a vehicle: You start with a car with the same type of tires on all four corners, and learn how the car handles. You adjust tire pressure, tires sizes and suspension setting until you...

HELP! Need info on radio removal!!!!

Mike, If I hadn't lent my digital camera to some one, I send you some pictures. The bezel on my 97 GTS was only snapped and velcrowed in place(No Screws): There are two Velcro fasteners towards the rear of the bezel (Behind gear shift boot and ash tray. ) There are six other snap connectors...

Which O-ring to remove in proportioning valve?

I'm asking for information so as not to make a fatal mistake in my attempts to do what seems to be considered a fairly standard procedure. I wish to have a little more brake performance, and I do realize that I run the risk of locking up the rear wheels... It was my understnadin the the VCA...

Which O-ring to remove in proportioning valve?

So I am cleaning up the brakes on my 97 GTS, and I wanted to remove the O-ring from the proportioning valve. I couldn't find any photo's of this, and I want to make sure I removed the right one! I removed the one that is on the end of the piston that is held in by a spring, towards the inside...

Questions on my new 97 GTS

I had the same problem with my GTS. The PO smoked, and was stinky. I used a product called "resolve". They sell it in stores next to all the laundry detergent and cleaning stuff. I sprayed a whole bottle over the entire interior (carpet, and headliner), then but a fan in the car with the...

    Viper Wrecked

SCS, Truly sorry to hear about your loss. My advice, take the money and walk away-- make that RUN AWAY!. There is no way the repaired car will ever be as good as the original. I am currently restoring a 97 GTS that had been in a MINOR wreck, (Here's a link with photos)...

    removing rivets wheel splash shield?

Nadine, I recently removed one of my splash guards. I used a drill for most of the rivets. On some I couldn't get enough room for the drill, so I used a grinder. After you get the heads of the rives off you can remove the large washers, and then the splash guard. You then use a center punch...

    It's Alive!!!

Re: It\'s Alive!!! Thanks for all the advice and input. Turns out, it's NOT engine oil it's POWER STEERING FLUID!!! OK, so shoot me. What was happening is that I have a steep driveway that I back up into, and have to crank the steering wheel all the way over. So I am revving the engine, and...

    It's Alive!!!

Re: It\'s Alive!!! JonB, Thanks for the reply. I already bought a stock air box, with K&Ns and smooth tubes. I will put it on soon. So if I understand you correctly you agree that the oil leak is being caused by excess valve cover pressure. If the problem goes away after unplugging the...

    It's Alive!!!

It\'s Alive!!! It's Alive! I finally got my 97 GTS Viper running that I bought on November 26, 2001. It has been a long long long 6 weeks. Owning the car, but never having driven it was driving me crazy! The car still doesn't have a hood, and no exhaust on the drivers side-- Just an elbow...
