    Headlight Lens

I agree completely. Polycarbonate (plexiglass) was used in WWII for airplane windows. Most famously in fighter planes, they vacuum formed large heated sheets over complex molds for bubble canopies with high optical quality. The real work is in the molds for low optical distortion. 3-D printers...

Help! Gen 1 engine coolant leak

It's a Gen1. Tstat is at the back of the motor. Revving the engine may have worsened the leak an could have sprayed into the valley.

    Gen1 hard door windows

Just a heads-up from a 30 year Viper owner - the engineers fiddled with the latch mechanisms throughout the Gen 1 production run. Nothing major, just fractional tolerance deals. If there are choices for hard tops, it is best to try and buy one that is known to fit well on the year model you have.

    Viper Mechanic

The earlier Vipers are as simple as a base model pickup truck. Any new owner with some level of mechanical skill should own and read the service manual. You can help your trusted shop become familiar with particular elements of the car before service.

    92 model

A former mechanic at my dealer very recently sent me pics of my '93 Viper while it was getting the A/C installed and ready for me to pick up. These cars need to be kept whole if they are in decent shape and can be made driveable without too much fuss!

    Knocking at My Back Door?!

Have a friend rock the wheels F/R with no load. Feel around the inner and outer half-shaft connections for slack associated with the knock. Expect some gear lash in the diff itself and filter that from the shafts. This would also be a great time to check toe links by grabbing at 9 and 3, then...

    Knocking at My Back Door?!

Could be a CV joint going bad. The diffs are also known to be problematic. Drain the fluid and check for metal.

GTS Dipstick: need Distance from FULL mark to top of dipstick tube

I just looked closely and mine does not have the bead at the top of the tube. It was smooth before brazing on the threads. There was a PN stamp, but only on the inboard side of the tab - the outboard side is unmarked in any way. My pocket tape measure fit in the tight confines, but was too...

GTS Dipstick: need Distance from FULL mark to top of dipstick tube

You have a dipstick in the engine. If it is long enough for both marks and another 1.5+ inches, just call it good. Mark yours to match my 96 couple's and just pour in 8 qt of fresh oil. It should be very close to the ADD mark. Pour another qt in and see if it is half way. Use the last quart to...

GTS Dipstick: need Distance from FULL mark to top of dipstick tube

Tom, the tube and bracket you have are correct for your '96 GTS. If you pull the stick, the tube should stick past the tab by about 3/4". If that checks out, then all you need to do is measure down 20-1/8 from the top of your cup and scribe a "MAX" mark on the smooth side of your dipstick...

GTS Dipstick: need Distance from FULL mark to top of dipstick tube

Here are photos of both 96 and 98 dipsticks, along with their tube attachments at the valve covers. Dipstick lengths measured from T-handle stop - '96 PN4763791 AB: 22-5/8 '98 PN 4763791 AC: 20-13/16 T-stop to upper oil level mark - '96: 20-1/16 '98: 18-3/8 These measurements are accurate to...

    Trackday Brake Questions

This is a handy chart. A track Viper likes a 295-315 front tire a lot. If you don't have ABS, then you are likely going to flat spot your 275 fronts with an 80 compound on 14" rotors. Judging from the torque rise, you'll have to be very careful to avoid that. I just don't know what kind of...

    Big jugs of Mobil1 15W-50 at Wal-Mart

Thanks for that. I'll keep right on doing what I'm doing. I had my engine honed, re-rung and installed new valves in 2020 at 36k because I stupidly left a paper drip towel in the oil entry galley while installing new timing cover gasket and doing a full chassis detail. I forgot about it and the...

Thoughts on this Gen II GTS

At COTA in June, I pulled up to the grid 5 times for runs. Two times, the grid lady came over, leaned in and said 'this is the most gorgeous color blue. It is just fabulous in the sunlight!' In the paddock, a guy driving a pearl white Ferrari 812 pitted a few spaces over walked over while I was...

    Big jugs of Mobil1 15W-50 at Wal-Mart

If your car is hitting 110 psi, then there's an oil pump relief spring problem. The way people throw away hardly used premium synthetic motor oil and obsess over filters just floors me. To each his own.

    Trackday Brake Questions

Ideally, you want to bed your discs with the pad you plan to use. I do not run race pads/rotors on the street unless it's just to the convenience store between track days. They wear better at optimum temps for the rotor/pad and that takes experimentation. The only time I run street pads/rotors...
