I would like to know how to change the oil myself on my 2001 GTS. Can someone outline a step by step or point me to another part of the forum if this topic has already been covered. I am assuming Mobil 1 oil filter and oil, but what is the filter number and what weight of oil (for both winter and summer)? Also, I do not have a pit or lift so how do I elevate the car without damaging it? Please...a serious response!!! Thx.

Come over my house and we will put it up on my quicklift and do the oil change right after I get back from my drive to heat the oil up.

NJViper,
Check with any Jiffy Lube, Valvoline Quik Change, etc. and see if they will do the labor, usually $20 or so. Bring your own Mobil 1 and filter. Worth the $20!

I would stay away from Jiffy Lube or any of them chain type stores (dumb kids working on cars). I would recomend a Viper Tech (worth the money for saved aggrivation) or on a serious note you would be more than welcome to do it at my house on the lift, I would be more than happy to give you a hand and would love to compare notes on the Z. Always willing to help a fellow car enthusiast

My viper tech from Big Valley Dodge just called me to tell me that he just finished my oil change and he went ahead and had the car washed. How's that for service?

Buy the oil at Walmart (Mobil One, 10W-30 -- you'll need 10 quarts) and take it to your Dodge dealer. Let them use a Mopar filter (after all, it's what the factory recommends), which they will have in stock (it fits Rams, Intrepids). It shouldn't cost you more than $25, since you're supplying the oil. Or, if you've got to have a Mobil One filter, go to Autozone and get one. The part number is M1-204. The Mopar Performance oil filter is a Mobil One filter, and it comes in a box with a GTS-R on it. I doubt the dealer will have that in stock, though. Why not take up one of these guys' offers to use their lifts? You'll meet some other Viper owners and take care of maintenance at the same time. If you lived in Northern Virginia, I'd be making the same offer.

Yeah, yeah, I know -- the Mopar filter *****, etc. I use the Mobil One myself. But really, there are a lot of knowledgable Viper guys, including some racers, who are using the Mopar filters. And the factory recommends it, so I seriously doubt you're going to hurt the engine by using one.

assuming you are not going to road race your viper. i would reccomend valvoline synthetic 5-40 weight for the winter and castrol synthetic 5-50 weight for the summer. k&n gold oil filter (traps 10 microns). 2001 vipers hold 10 quarts of oil. i would use 9 quarts of oil and 1 quart of prolong oil additive all the time. make sure u get the oil good and hot before u change it. give it plenty of time 2 drain as well. after it has all drained. take 1 quart of 5-30 weight oil and pour it in the motor to flush any remaining residue out of the motor.
