Hey folks, picking up an older style Borla exhaust in mint condition. The exhaust has stainless piping to delete the cats. This comes with the set-up, but I'm not sure if I should use it. I want to, I think I'll like the sound and performance, but not sure what will happen. Can I get it confirmed here that on an 02 the check engine light comes on and the engine starts to run funny. Is an O2 simulator the only solution if this is the case?

Yes the O2 simulator is mandatory in your case.It is very simple to install it. When removing cats:
- your Viper will pollute more
- depending on other setups it will be louder
- the cockpit will be much cooler (this should be the main raison to remove your cats).
- You can expect 1-5% gain in Hp depending on your setup and rpm.

My old style borla with no cats turned on my CEL. So I got some o2 sims which fixed the problem.

Thanks, where did you guys pick-up the o2 sims? Do you think the car will still pass emissions?

As far as passing emissions, I suppose it depends on what they test...in Colorado they look for the cats visually....so I don't think it would pass in Colorado.

Where are you?I think you get the sniff in Ontario so you can't pass without cats. Will need high flows.Contact someone in the Ontario VCA region for more speciffics of testing etc. GTS Bruce

Ya, we have the sniffers here, I thought someone said that are cars are suprisingly clean and could pass even without cats. Another option would be to put the stocks back on for the test. Thanks to everyone for their response and links.

Are you guys sure the car won't pass without cats? My understanding is that a properly tuned car makes NO MORE emisions without cats. Visual insepctions are also not a problem, as you can't see the cats on a Viper. The sims are to keep the check engine lights off and not trigger the OBDII, right?

In Maryland (Bel Air) they didn’t even test my car they said it was too low so they gave me a waiver and said I was good for the next two years and didn’t take my $14 either; what a pleasant surprise :nana:

If you use some kind of engine control, (VEC.1 etc.) you should be able to tune it so it doesn't waste fuel. (burns cleaner)

Every time i have tried to get away with No cats.....Problems...Why not just go with a Roe high-flow cat setup? This is what I did and sound/performance are definitely there...the heat in the cabin is also cut down to a point where it is no longer an issue. Especially with Borla mufflers it will sound great. Good luck

My buddy tried to pass his transam with no cats. He used his programmer to lean it out alot but was still far away from passing!

The o2 sims turn off the CEL but the main reason is to prevent your car from running in limp mode...

What city are you in? I've never had them check any car I've been in...
