Will pulling the fuse for the airbag disable it? I know there is a capacitor that must be allowed to drain down.

Have a steering wheel change coming up.

Thanks

What? you don't enjoy playing "Hindenberg Roulette"? :D

On a similar note, does the fuse disable both airbags? I'd like to give my little niece and nephews a ride, but my 97 doesn't have passenger side disable.

If the answer is "no" and/or you want to have the easier ability to disable the airbag when needed, check out http://www.airbagonoff.com. I had one of their switches in my 350Z so I could take my son for rides in the car. They came to my house to do the install, did a top notch install job, and the switch they offer is apparently the best aftermarket switch available.

Pulling the fuse will disable both airbags. That's what I do when I used to take one of my baby girls for a ride.

Hemibeep: The tech that maintained my '97 before I bought it, told me "off the record" that pulling the fuse would disable it. He of coarse couldn't recommend that I do that though.

Warfang: I have always assumed that since there are two fuses and two airbags, that pulling them both would disable both.

I have kids and they love to ride in the car so I regularly do this.

I would double check with the Wizard on this one. I swear I remember reading that the fuse is not enough if you are servicing the steering wheel. It could just be the capacitor thing, but I would make sure before going in there.

Re: airbag disable answer

There was a kit from Dodge to add an airbag switch to 96 & 97 Gen 2 Vipers.

NHTSA approved it

Make : DODGE Model : VIPER Year : 1997
Manufacturer : DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORPORATION
Service Bulletin Num : 083799 Date of Bulletin: NOV 12, 1999
NHTSA Item Number: 6089800
Component: AIR BAGS:ON-OFF SWITCH ASSEMBLY
Summary:
DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORPORATION IS NOW OFFERINB AIRBAG ON / OFF SWITCHES FOR SELECTED VEHICLES. *TT

Make : DODGE Model : VIPER Year : 1997
Manufacturer : DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORPORATION
Service Bulletin Num : 081798 Date of Bulletin: DEC 30, 1998
NHTSA Item Number: 603153
Component: AIR BAGS:ON-OFF SWITCH ASSEMBLY
Summary:
SUBJECT REGARDING AIRBAG ON - OFF SWITCHES. *YC

An important item was how the kit grounded the airbag when the switch turned it off.

While a mis-deployment would be very rare, just pulling a fuse or disconnecting leaves the circuit vulnerable to an electric static discharge that could deploy the airbag.

also, the kit only allowed you to disable the pass. side airbag - not the driver's side.

This lets you disable the driver airbag:

Make : DODGE Model : VIPER Year : 1997
Manufacturer : DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORPORATION
Service Bulletin Num : 970919083297 Date of Bulletin: SEP 19, 1997
NHTSA Item Number: 54423
Component: AIR BAGS
Summary:
AUTHORIZED AIRBAG DEACTIVATION FOR MEDICAL NECESSITY. *YC

I got my kit from Nancy @ Woodhouse many years ago.

The Dodge Part numbers I got were :

05011483AA for the switch and
0LB38JX8AH for the dash piece bezel.

That dash piece is from a 98 and has a different texture than a 96-97

Ron had a new one he never used. Don't know if he ever sold it. [email protected]

You could likely just get a bezel with the switch from a 98-02 parts Viper and install. It's not too difficult.
