Alternator replacement question

partway through changing my alternator I decided I should at least glance at my service manual.
first line big warning: remove negative cable from battery before removing battery output wire from generator. injury can result.
next line: disconnect positive battery bullet connector next to power steering.
do i really need to pull negative lead off battery?
is there an easier way to do it ?
any help is greatly appreciated.

id pull the cable off the battery first

I think everything you do leads in the manual with disconnect the battery. I ignore that with the exception of working on electrical devices.

Just the other night I disconnected the positive cable because it is up front and started to remove the starter. Major sparks could have shorted out electrical items. Do disconnect the neg cable at the battery.
