Aluminum flywheel and drag racing

Why have I repeatedly heard/read NOT to use an aluminum flywheel for drag racing? I understand why the lighter flywheel is beneficial, why not for the 1/4 mile? Thanks.

Makes no sense, if the purpose is for a lighter flywheel.
If the Aluminum doesn't like the heat, that is a different problem.
We used a MUCH lighter flywheel when we were drag racing in NHRA Modified Eliminator, back in the 1970's (held the National record several times in the '70's). Does it give you more HP - No. What it does is allows you to 'get to' the HP quicker; like removing a brake restricting RPM. Think of it this way (don't do it), pull on your E-brake part way and accelerate, you will be restricted and acceleration will be slowed.
There are some draw backs, like having enough RPM when leaving to prevent a bog, and in a Viper, too much RPM when leaving can create wheel spin.

With street tires,its not such a big deal.With slicks,the stock flywheel was better for 60fters.
The main reason to install the aluminum flywheel and absolutly the most important reason is the correct the RPM hang when blipping the throttle infront of a crowd.

If your tires stick on launch there are three choices of action in combination: 1) clutch slips; 2) car moves forward; or 3) you bog. Assuming the clutch holds, the slick guys (Chad for example) say there is a fine line between bogging and not and the inertia of the heavier wheel helps stay on the non-bog side of the line. LOTS of talk in the last month about this on this forum.

Great, concise explanation. It's clear now. I won't be running slicks but I do plan to switch to Kumho's on the rear to get more traction. Perhaps I should stay with the stock flywheel. Thanks.
