hey folks! this might not make too much sense at first, but, I'll just say that I purchased a Renault 16 (1967) last year and I've been literally struggling finding parts and any sort of help in fixing that car.... and literally nobody wants to help! I did some skimming through the other posts on this forum and I'm thrilled to see that the viper community is so big and helpful!

long story short.. I'm living in Romania, Eastern Europe, and I've been a car enthusiast ever since my dad bought me some car models back in the 90's - first one was a blue/white Viper, so I had to have it at some point.. feeling a little bit sad that I got it 2 years after his passing, but it's by far the nicest car I've ever driven in my entire life. And by nicest I don't mean the most comfortable one, but the scariest one - and that's what I'm looking for in a car. I also have a 2018 challenger hellcat and a few other cars that are probably not worth mentioning :)
from my previous experience with the Challenger (I toasted 3 clutch kits from Mantic), sourcing parts is a nightmare. I have to wait for about 1.5 months for stuff to be delivered into Romania from the US and clear customs. anyway, enough said..

I found the Viper for sale in Feb in Staten Island, it was listed for $70k (25k miles), non negotiable, it has SVP (?) headers, a muffler delete.... and I'm not sure if it still has cats because the exhaust reeks of gas smell. I'll definitely take a look as soon as I lift it up, but if it does have cats, 100% i will delete them.. I want it to be as loud as humanly possible.
so.... I got it, since it was the only one for sale at the time. It got here on May 10 and I've already put around 250 miles on it but my tags expired so right now it's sitting quietly in my garage waiting for parts.... what parts? well.... this is what I was actually hoping to get some feedback/help on :)

1) is this shifter position normal (see photo below)? I know that in my Hellcat (it's also a manual), the shifter sits in Neutral as if it's in other cars' 1st gear, but this one is weird, it feels like the actual shifter is rotated around its axis clockwise, if that makes sense..

2) the aforementioned problematic shifter doesn't want to spring back in the 'classic' Neutral position, between 3rd and 4th. if I put it in 5th or 6th and then pull it out, it will spring back, but if I drag it towards myself to put it in 1st or 2nd, it won't go back between 3rd and 4th. Any ideas what could be wrong with it?

3) sometimes (10%?) when I drive the car normally and try to change to 3rd gear, it feels like the shifter doesn't go in all the way. Upon releasing the clutch (slowly), I start hearing grinding noises and it pops out. Guessing the least invasive fix for this would be to change the engine & gearbox mounts (does anyone know where I could get some?) and if this doesn't fix it, maybe 3rd synchro/gear needs to be replaced?

4) what felt super weird was that if I try to change 3rd to 4th, sometimes I end up putting it in 2nd. So to change from 3rd to 4th, I need to drag the shifter down to Neutral and then slightly to the right and down into 4th. Is there something wrong with my car or is it 'standard' Viper behavior?

5) car was advertised as having a 'race clutch'. I couldn't lift it (yet) to see what is underneath, but I actually dislike the clutch SO MUCH. The first 2-3" of the pedal feel dead, and it engages at the very bottom which is really problematic because I'm 5'7". It also makes a really bad rattling sound when sitting in Neutral at idle. I got the same ugly sound on my challenger from the stupid Mantic clutch/flywheel that it has. Question.... from what I've read, OEM flywheels are no longer produced? What would be the best replacement for the entire assembly? I think I can get the Luk clutch.. but then I think I also need a slave cylinder, an actuator.. and what about the flywheel? Is anyone running Fidanza? I've heard mixed feedback because it weighs 1/2 of the OEM flywheel..

6) what oil are you guys using? I would like to change the gearbox oil hoping to get rid of the ugly NGR and I also need to fill up the engine with oil, but again some people are using 10w40, others are saying 10w30.

7) oil filters? Mopar part 5037836AB? I read that a dedicated Viper oil filter with a special valve is needed?

8) brakes felt a little weird during my last drive with the car, the pedal went soft, which was really weird because I had not abused the brakes before and up until that point, the pedal was hard as a rock. Thinking about bleeding them/filling up the brake fluid, or could there be another issue somewhere that I haven't thought about?

9) car seems to be throwing some blue smoke when lifting off the gas, my mechanic recommended to change the engine valve stem oil seal (part #53009887 and #53009886 x 10 each) and the gasket valve cover (part 5245095 x 2). did anyone else go through the same thing?

10) this little pulley thingy seems to be the plastic version, so I'm guessing I need to upgrade it to the metal one?

11) has anyone changed the control arm bushings? I don't know if mine were ever replaced, but I found some for sale locally, so not sure if they're worth buying?

12) my understanding is that the cooling fan setup on late gen 2's is much better than the one that I have. My temp gauge sits a little bit over the 190 mark, so not sure if this upgrade is needed..

13) any other upgrades that I should be looking at?

I don't know if the Viper was too overpriced (with shipping, taxes, customs fees, VAT, etc, I ended up paying 6 figures for it) given these small issues, but leaving them aside, it is really scary to drive - much scarier than my 850 hp manual hellcat - and this is exactly what I am looking for in a 'weekend' car. It's got R888's so when the tyres warm up, it is glued to the road, but I did make the mistake to floor it once at night when they were cold and I nearly lost it - lesson learned there.

last but not least.. a few pics with it :)

Welcome to the Forum. I will try and do my best to answer all your questions. You wrote a Small Tome which is good! Its nice to see Vipers abroad.

Its had to say if the shifter is in the correct position by the Pic. I can tell you on my 96, with the engine off, if I move my shifter all the way to the right, it springs back to the center. Same for to the left (Test was with engine off)
Some of your Shifting issues could be related to the Engine Mounts and T r a n n y mounts so you want to check them for sure.

For oil, I run 10w-40 High Mileage per Dick Winkles (designed the Viper motor) because it keeps the seals supple if the car sits allot (storage etc) Read this thread https://www.viperclub.org/vca/threads/pennzoil-ultra-euro-5-40.662560/page-2#post-3309466

As far as brakes, Change fluid and bleed them as part of the process.

It is recommended to use the Viper filter but I have used Quality filters in the past.

Blue smoke, I have not heard of or run into Valve Guide seal issues but that doesn't mean their not bad. Try the 10w-40 high mileage first.

Are the control arm bushing bad? Make sure the arms don't have cracks in them where the bushings are. seems to happen on some track cars.

I replaced my pully on my 96 as your WILL eventually go. May also want to replace the bracket.

On my 96, I am running the factory fan with no issues. I do have a 180 stat in my car, it makes a big difference at cruising speeds. Car does run at 180.

NGR is Normal (doesn't hurt anything). I have slight NGR with Dex III in it which the 96 calls for. Some people run Oil but I prefer factory fill because of Paper Blockers in early T r a n s.
Your 96 has a T56, not a T6060 like your Challenger (if you car has a stick)

Don't think you paid to much if you car is a clean example.

I am weird, I keep my car all stock but it does have a 3 inch Borla (factory Cats). I have the factory pipes. May want to get High flow cats instead of no cats. Just me though.

Apologies if I missed something. Dean will most likely chime in as he has a 96 as well..

If you PM me your E-mail address, I have a really good Doc specifically written for the 96 GTS

Good luck with the car,
Dave

hey Dave, indeed, small tome is a good description, LOL!

the shifter itself is in the right position when in neutral, but the problem is that the knob is rotated clockwise?
maybe this explains it better..
and yes, I did purposefully cut the photo so that the Viper Club of America badge is visible :D
mine doesn't spring back from 1st/2nd, but I'll try the mounts first and maybe that'll take care of things.
I'll also ask my mechanic to take a look underneath that leather upholstery piece, maybe there's a simple spring missing/broken that could easily be replaced..

I will definitely order the mounts:
I found the engine ones on rockauto: ANCHOR 2710
can't seem to find the transmission mounts anywhere?

concerning the blue smoke.. if I place an order on rockauto (or anywhere else), it'll take about a month or so to actually get it here in Romania because of customs and other delays, so I'd rather proactively replace the valve guide seals even though changing the oil could do the job :)
here's a pretty good depiction - note that while driving, it only shoots smoke if I rev it up (say 4-5k rpm) and then let off the gas instead of changing up a gear
oh, and yes, it was for a loudest pipes contest.. and it was the loudest car - 131 db

I don't know if the control arm bushings are bad, but I could just proactively get all of them - this is what is up for sale:

pulley and bracket - you mean.. this?

I'll leave the factory fan be, in this case. I won't be taking the Viper in bumper to bumper east european traffic anyway, at least not too often. She's a garage princess..

I really hate NGR, but thanks for the Dex III reco. Once I get the parts that I need, I'll ask my mechanic to change the oil. Truth be told, the car is sort of.. loud, so I can't really hear the rattling sounds too much, unless I try to focus on them, in which case I can hear them through the exhaust sound. And yes, my hellcat is stick shift indeed. When I got it, it was slipping in 3rd and beyond, so I've changed 3 mantic clutches so far and it burnt all of them in under 2k miles (and I'm NOT a bad driver); going for an OEM one now.. the car has been sitting in the shop for almost 2 months waiting for parts.

until I can lift my car, I have no idea if it has high flow cats or no cats honestly, but just by the smell behind it probably has no cats at all.. I'll see what's what in about a month's time or so.

thanks for the oil filter, brakes and oil recommendations!

concerning the price, Vipers are pretty rare in Europe and many countries have absurd taxes on old(er) cars with really high emissions - in Austria you have to pay around $75k just to be able to register it if it's coming from the US and $4k if it's coming from Romania (just a random example, any other country from the EU would be the same). And Romanians have a sweet spot for the german triad (audi, bmw, merc), there are very few american cars around. There are probably less than 10 vipers in RO, I know only one other gen2 GTS (2002 I think) and 2 RT/10's (both black with cognac interior, so 1999), a red gen 4 and 3 black gen 5's.
as I said, when I started looking to buy one, there weren't any that were put up for sale in Europe and there were a few that I found on facebook marketplace, but the asking prices were all ~$80k for similar miles, but 1997. I found one that was put up for sale for $60k (Parker Cannon, are you around here? lol) but it had almost 60k miles on it and I wasn't too happy with the mileage.
long story short, I reckon I overpaid just by looking at previous transactions.. but then again, 5-10 years ago these beauties were going for 1/2 the price.. so I might be wrong.

Yes on IPSCO Pully.

Replacing valve seals certainly cant hurt that's for sure, just did my 69 Corvette.

Yes, your shift knob is turned to the clockwise position a bit, Factory position is straight.

Never had a problem overheating with my Factory Stat in. Yes newer Gen II Fans are better but I find my factory 96 just fine especially when you maintain coolant.

PM me your e-mail address, you wont be disappointed.

Love the REV Video. Hard to tell if its black or blue smoke or even both.

1) is this shifter position normal (see photo below)? I know that in my Hellcat (it's also a manual), the shifter sits in Neutral as if it's in other cars' 1st gear, but this one is weird, it feels like the actual shifter is rotated around its axis clockwise, if that makes sense..

The shifter needs to be rotated. There's a nut below the shifter under the boot. Loosen it and rotate the shift knob and tighten it back.
You must be registered for see images attach

2) the aforementioned problematic shifter doesn't want to spring back in the 'classic' Neutral position, between 3rd and 4th. if I put it in 5th or 6th and then pull it out, it will spring back, but if I drag it towards myself to put it in 1st or 2nd, it won't go back between 3rd and 4th. Any ideas what could be wrong with it?

I've got the ISPCO Short Throw Shifter and it has springs to help with shifting. I replaced the original shifter years ago and seem to remember it's not as tight a shifter.

5) The first 2-3" of the pedal feel dead, and it engages at the very bottom which is really problematic because I'm 5'7".

This is normal. The LUK clutch engages closer to the floor than other clutches.

6) what oil are you guys using? I would like to change the gearbox oil hoping to get rid of the ugly NGR and I also need to fill up the engine with oil, but again some people are using 10w40, others are saying 10w30.

NGR is a given on the GEN IIs. Mobile 1 Synthetic 10W30 and 10W40 are good.

7) oil filters? Mopar part 5037836AB? I read that a dedicated Viper oil filter with a special valve is needed?

I use the MOPAR MO-836 which is part# 5037836AB.

I also suggest replacing the brake fluid and bleeding.

10) this little pulley thingy seems to be the plastic version, so I'm guessing I need to upgrade it to the metal one?

Yes, replace with the IPSCO combination Power Steering Pump Pulley and Bracket.

12) my understanding is that the cooling fan setup on late gen 2's is much better than the one that I have. My temp gauge sits a little bit over the 190 mark, so not sure if this upgrade is needed..

It's normal for the engine temperature to be at and just beyond the 190 mark.

thank you both!

looking at this post..
..it makes me want to buy the bushings, but the guy quoted me 800 EUR for it, so I'm pretty sure it's crazy expensive compared to its normal price.
