The gas cap on the GTS is one of the best features of the car. It duplicates the cap used on the Shelby Cobra. The finish on the GTS is the same as the Cobra. Do not mess it up.

It's crappy aluminum that only has a clear coat on it, and they degrade over time especially at the hinge.
Hard chroming it would be a great way to preserve the look and durability.

Had mine Chromed and the plate underneath powder coated black, just need the time to put it back together, found the early cap with brass parts much easier to dismantle than the later with plastic pins which really require making new ones from brass. I never found an easy way to push them out, brass no problem.

Thought you might want to know:

As far as chroming, they don't do any surface preparation so the cap looks really pitted underneath.

It all depends on how picky you are. Mine has pitting, but that's the limitation of the aluminum. However, the pitting is less than 1% of the surface of the cap. Your miles may vary, but I'm 99.44% happy with mine. Looks a million times better than it did before with the worn clearcoat.

Remains to be seen. I am doing the surface preparation myself now and will take it to get chromed tomorrow.

Does make me wonder why dodge did not use a better material though.

They didn't even bother to use flexible wiring for the harness that goes from the doors to the body. You expect a billet gas cap?

Why don't you just peel off what's left of the old clear coat, and have the cap buffed?

I did strip the clear coat and buffed it, but I don't think it looks as good as chrome. Heading to the chrome place today to see what they can do.
