Right now I am on the fence between a Cobra Kit, Z06, or Viper.

I've seen a lot of older built Cobras and they seem to stand up pretty well to time.

Same goes for the Vette.

Other than major mechanicals, how do Vipers hold up? I mean like the interior plastic, leather seats, squeaks and rattles and such??

Great.
-No major mechanical issue.
-Interior is daily driver friendly.
-Seat are great
-No squeaks or rattles. That would be the Vettes.
-And such.......If you buy one you'll never go back. Or, use Viper in the same sentence as Vette. IMO

Thanks. Now I fully realize that a Viper is a totally different animal from an ordinary run of the mill Dodge but. Being an auto mechanic I have had a lot a chances to work on Dodge vehicles, no Vipers though, from various years and the build quality seems a bit lacking. I've replaced countless plastic dashes on Jeeps, Rams, and Concorde type vehicles because they literally fell apart.

I understand a Viper, Vette, Cobra are high performance cars and squeaks and rattles are part of the game. I just don't want the ancillary parts falling apart around me.

Thanks for helping a Noob guys....

It depends on the year. Andrew has a Gen III which is more DD friendly. Gen II's can do the job too, but a little more harshly. Gen I's, tough call.

O.k I understand I asked a loaded question on a Viper forum... :)

As for me being a mechanic? I work on cars 10 hours a day, except for hot rod work the last thing I want to do with my evenings and weekends is work on my own car....:nono:

Trust me, the 'Vette is a way distant third on my list. I don't look good in gold chains... :rolaugh:

Thats why I love mechanics but i'll never be an auto mechanic because I really enjoy wrenching on cars and I don't want to lose that passion with working on my own hot rods!

I suggest you buy a Viper, it's a whole nother world then owning a cobra or corvette.

Well, you DID ask on a VIPER forum~~:D !! I think I'd also go with a VIPER...no better experience than a 'RAW BEAST' experience!!!:drive: ~~~~Good luck in your decision. ~juli

My first car was a Duster, which rusted away. I saved the drivetrain for a kit Cobra (used the 340 with Thermoquad, Holley Dominator, pistol grip aluminum four speed, 3:55 in a 8 3/4 rear held on with a custom 3-link system.) I had the Cobra 13 years and won lots of AX events in the EMod class. I drove it whenever I could (~4500miles/yr) and it never failed me (except for an axle with the older 4" bolt circle that had redrilled for a 4.5" bolt circle. Stupid college kid, I was.) I sold it in 1998 for ~$26K with new paint. But, it had no AC, no radio, no roof, no windows, no females that would ride twice, lots of leg burns....

Enter Dodge's kit car, AKA Gen 1 Viper. Roof, AC, stereo, comfortable seats, windows, parts I could get at the store instead of junkyard, and just like Shelby's Cobra, it was the brute force approach to a sports car. I drive it 11 months a year, have put 70K miles on it (90K total) and have used those urges to play mechanic to find all the leaks, play with the brakes, lowered the suspension over the factory shocks.

I guess my point it that the Cobra, like any kit, was great fun but in hindsight had a limited usefulness. The Viper can be almost an everyday car if you aren't anal about keeping it like new and you won't lose any of the fun or performance. It makes going to work a highlight that too many reserve for the weekend.

I don't notice anything going bad on my interior. But then, it would have been fine with me if Dodge would have left it gutted.

107,000 miles and people can't believe it looks as good as it does.

I have 45,000 miles on my 98 GTS. Not much in the way of problems. Still looks good and drives good. I drive it almost every day and leave it parked out in the Texas Panhandle sun, wind, heat and just about anything else weather wise you could throw at it and it still looks fine.

I do drive it like a regular car, so I'm not exactly putting a lot of strain on the drive train.

I'm going to post from the other point of view. My car Viper has 200,000 miles on it. It's a Gen 1, which is the worst of the squeakers. It does rattle and does squeak. It's also only waterproof with the original soft top (even then only mostly) ... but as it's been mentioned above it's like no other car out there. I track my car at least once a month. I'm not very nice to it at ALL as far as baby'ing it. But in ten years of ownership I still get people smiling and giving me thumbs up, taking pictures and asking to sit it in EVERY time I leave the house. If you're looking for a common easy daily driver go with the Vette. Great car very easy to drive. Kit cars are cool looking but everyone knows it's a kit-car and in my humble opinion just not as exclusive or interesting.

The Viper is one of the most fun cars to mod as well. Every little thing you do has a fairly noticiable effect. From air tubes to S/C's. You fight for traction control more then anything at the edge (no cpu babysitter) and even a tire / rubber change has a BIG effect on the car's ability to do more.

Anyways good luck, my $ would go with the Viper. If $ is limited go with an older Viper. Gen II+ = MUCH better for daily driver, less rattle / squeaks.

I've owned 400+ Dodges during my life and right now there's about 14 of them in my yard. My Duster, Dodge Stealth TT, Demon and 1 of my Turbo Daytonas have equal hp to the 1st Gen Viper. BUT, I have also got a Roe Supercharged Viper GTS parked in the garage! I get first every car show I go to, unless they don't have a "current collector car" class. With 10.4ET in the quarter mile with stock tires ... you'll have no trouble figuring out which is the #1 choice for driving. The 98 GTS I had was better than new with 27,000mi. on it and it was also a show winner with 600rwhp with the Roe sc.

My '01 has 25,000mi. and it won trophies at the V10 Nationals. When it's a Viper I'd expect them to be like new condition for a lot more years than any other car.

If you truly want a unique car a Cobra (or any other kit car) is all dependent upon the builder. It could be a new junker. I imported from the US to Canada and I wouldn't want to try that with a kit car. Viper shouldn't be a problem as it is built to Gov. specs and they've already be approved.

I was in a Car Show with a late model 'vette parked 3 spots away. A few people looked at the vette, but not many. There was always a crowd around my Viper. If you want ordinary - they make vettes for that. Vipers are extrordinary! They also happen to most people's Dream car.
