Anyone know from this photo what year and gen the motor is ?

I would be inclined to let the exhaust manifolds do all the talking, and say its a 1996, but is there any chance its newer or older ?

Its an empty block, apparently new casting, was never built or something. Let me know, the guy is wondering if I would be interested in it.

uh those ARE MANIFOLDS SILLY !! HAHHAH.. .lol.. You know a lot of headers with casting numbers ?? Look at the second exhaust port from the front, I can blow up the pic if you want. Also we dont have bolt ups on our shorty headers, its a band clip set up, so no threads are needed.

That is infact a cast iron manifold. fyi.

BTW, anyone could have put those on, and since only 2 bolts are holding them, I have a feeling thats what someone did, I think we should focus on the block, see if there are any give aways, I at least need to know if its gen 2

If you can get a part number off of the block casting I can tell you exactly what year and what part of the year that block came from...

Silly me, but I still say 1998 and newer. I have about 20 factory sets of shorty headers (or you call them manifolds) in the garage. I have some 1996 manifolds too. They changed to the design in the picture 1998.

Not sure, but I think the light bulb is 75w.

lol good stuff, thanks for the laugh !!

I dont want to show too much interest in the block ya know, rather get a good deal on it ;-)

But I can ask him to get me a number, again, I think its a block they bought from dodge, and heads, as a mock up to see if it would fit in a miata. But they changed their mind, so I am sure it wont have a vin on it.

Well if its made out of Cast Iron, Im going to call it a Manifold.

Now, my 2002 has shorty headers, from the factory, and those are regular steal, not cast Iron.

Manifolds are usually just a slab of cast iron with holes in them not even remotely resembling headers....I do believe there is a difference between the two...Same function different design...Looking at the way they all merge maybe these are manifolds made to look like headers :smirk:

Gen 1.

Early Gen 2s came with the cast iron manifolds as on this one, later Gen 2s came with tubular. I just replaced my cast iron ones with tubular, so trust me these are cast.

It looks like the passenger side throttle body is opened via a cable on the outside and not a rod connecting the two throttle bodies - another Gen 1 sign.

Can't see well, but there Gen 1 thermostats were in the rear and Gen 2 in the front? I have a picture of a Gen 2 front cover and there is an additional coolant passage that wouldn't be in a Gen 1 front cover. I don't see where this coolant passage would line up with anything in the picture, so again think picture above is Gen1.

Last - Gen 1 oil pump passage mating surface on block above isn't same shape as Gen 2 front cover.

Gen 1.

Gen1 engine. Has duel throttle cables, note the cable bracket on passenger side of the plenum. Also notice the hole on the drivers side valve cover. This connected the valve covers to the airbox in order to vent (which is why gen1 airboxes got so damn oily over time). Gen2s did not vent in this location, their valve covers are smooth on the driver side.

Exhaust manifolds should be stainless from 96+, which included the RT/10 for 96.

Yes, EARLY gen1s have 4 ribs, and the intake manifold was magnesium vs. cast aluminum.

Yep, Gen1's T-stat was located at the back of the block near the coils. PITA to get off too :) They had hard lines on both sides of the block to the t-stat housing.
