Now that the actual Audi R8 is for sale in North America it seems to have lost a lot of power and isn't very fast in real life testing. Not a prototype anymore, can the Audi R8 even beat a Gen 1 Viper? http://forums.viperclub.org/driven/614867-audi-r8-real-info.html

After argueing with the posted threads here it turns out that the magazine articles were all hype and instead of underreporting the hp, the published numbers were way above the car's reality. The speed of the car (0-60) is well over a second slower than what was reported earlier. I think the Gen 1 Viper would wipe the track with this thing.

Next reality check should be the GTR.

A genI requires some real skill to drive fast. The performance might be in the machine but not necessarily behind the wheel.

i think you'll find the GTR to be a track animal - by all accounts stock to stock, the ring, mag tests etc it's very impressive, but we'll see. I'm looking forward to seeing one in the metal - wouldnt own one, its a different kind of car to a viper - all technology and computers, launch control etc, the viper is more emotion, 3 pedals and driver orientated...

Saw an R8 two days ago when coming home from work...saw a Ferrari 599 the day before or after at Best Buy. Weird thing about the Ferrari was that it had Italian plates. Always makes me want to go home and take the Viper our for a ride when I see the other supercars...

I took the wife's Charger for a Traction Control test drive the other day. We live on a gravel road. I usually drive the road at about 40mph. With TC on the brakes automatically applied at corners and slowed me to 30mph. In a hurry, I can slide around the corners at 60mph or more. Any non TC car could pass the TC'd Charger down the road.

I went to High Performance Driving school and TC is for STUDENTS! It slows the car down so none of that stuff is going to do anything except slow the GTR down to SLOW. TC can slow the car down so much that some vettes have 3 TC settings. It's fro student drivers, Ice, Thunderstorms and snow. Great for driving slowly, but not optimium for performance. JonB, my instructor said that the TC gets turned off - after the Student learns to control the car. If anyone thinks TC is faster than a good/trained driver test TC on a gravel road. I'd recommend taking a HP driving course, ask the experts and they'll explain how cars go fast, car dynamics, maximium cornering speed, etc.

I knew that TC slowed the car down (it applies the brakes) and took the course anyway. I learned a lot.
