Gen1 Exhaust Questions

I spent this weekend installing a set of Edelbrock headers and ROE 3" side exhaust. In the course of the install, a couple of things came up. Any help would be appreciated.

1) There is a rubber gromet that holds the stock exhaust, after the muffler, to the side frame. I need that to hold the ROE exhaust on. How can I get it off the stock exhaust? There are some caps that don't seem to come off.

2) There is very little clearance between the turnout from the headers, where the flexpipe is, and the frame. I think it's less than 1/8", and a small piece of the turnout may already be contacting. Is this an issue? I would think that the motion of the engine during high torque would cause problems.

3) The service manual calls for 200 inch/lb torque on the exhaust manifold bolts. Is there any reason to torque the headers tighter than that?

200 inch pounds = 16.66 ft lbs !

Some soapy water will probably let the rubber grommet come off easier. You just have to pull it off.

I put the Edelbrocks on my 95 three years ago. If I recall that on the passenger side where you described the header wants to hit the frame, ever so slightly.

I believe this is because the engine in the stock mounts actually sits a little crooked and leans towards the passenger side. I just shimmed the motor up a little on the passenger side mounts to level it off and give the clearance needed. Have not had any issues for 3 years now.

I just worked on a gen.1 that had the engine twisted to the left (sitting in car), couldn't figure out why the exhausrt was hitting the frame until I walked in front of the car and could actually see the engine was crooked. Loosen motor mounts, reposition engine, problem fixed!!!!!
