Re: going from stock gears to 3.45\'s 1/4 mile times
Three important points are (1) to make sure that you take the car (or rear-end if you take it out yourself) to a shop that specializes in differential work. I chewed up one set of gears in 500 miles from a bad install.(2)Make sure that you get Super Dana 44 gears. You will find that regular Dana 44s are much cheaper (they are commonly used in Corvettes and Camaros), but the Super Dana 44s are used in the Gen II Vipers and are hardened.(3)Make absolutely sure that you follow the break-in instructions exactly, and baby the gears through the break-in or you can burn them up and get loud whining noises.
Check out the "how to" section here on the forum. You may want to consider installing a drain plug as it's not much work for a shop to do it when the gears are out, and it's MUCH easier to change the differential fluid later on for a couple minutes work.
It may sound tricky, but the job of swapping the gears is not too bad if you have a pro do the work, and the feel of the new gears is great, with the power feeling better in each gear.
