I think the insulation was supposed to be cemented to the sills. Here is a pic showing the oval areas ofblack adhesive on the inside of the sill. [image]

[/image] but when I took off the sills, the insulation was loose and resting up against the Cat. ...got overheated....the foil was scorched and very thin, fragile and flacking.. and burnt in a small spot...and the insulation there has absorbed moisture ( from washing car?) [image]

So, I got some Extreeme Weather metal foil tape at Home Depot. And patched up the insulation pad. I cut up some thin alum panel for a patch and did an over-lay with the tape ( great tape and very sticky) Of course I preped the surface first to promote adhesion. [image]

I then reshaped the insulation blanket to fit better in the sill( it was sitting to high and whoever had it off last had pierced holes in the insulation when re-attaching the sill [image]

I used RTV as adhhesive to fix the insulation tight in the sill.

I am trying to create an air gap between the Cat and the insulation blanket, so I cut up an aluminum vent cap ( Home Depot) to put around the Cat( I mushed down the vent slots to be sure of clearance) [image]

[/image] This slotted spacer I made is about 5 inches wide

Then I got some alum screen to make a double wrap around the rest on the side exhaust [image]

Next step, I want to cut a vent in front of the sill behind the front tire

I'm interested to hear how this works for you. I had used some adhesive backed "foil" tape that was rated for extreme temperatures. Bottom line is that, although the foil surface itself was heat rated, the adhesive side is not. Everything gets really hot in the sidesill area including the surface that the adhesive was against. So in my case, the adhesive from the foil tape burned up...and after the first few runs, there was an awful smell. I pulled the side sills and saw what happened. Needless to say I pulled the foil tape out for fear of it catching fire.

I am in the insulation business. Let me know how it works for you , if not I can recommend some other types . Bottom line is that I think you will need a ceramic blanket type...........

I recently had the exhaust changed (at Roe Racing) and they installed their insulating wrap on the mufflers (in the side sills). I think it is helping a bit although I have not driven it other than back from the shop. However, they told me they measured a 83 degree drop in temp. after the wrap was installed.

I put the roe side sill insulation in as well. Dropped temperatures a lot considering I have no stock heat shielding in my sills. Still gets hot, but it takes a while and never gets so hot to the point that it can burn you.

I'm just trying to illustrate... my stock shields work fine...heat not a problem...but, I think they would be more efficient if they were not in contact with the cat....it burns out the alum shield.
I am lucky...I don't have a heat problem...mine are very cool.....I think because of the high flow cats and full Henesy system frt-to-rear...cats are a big heat stove!!!!!
I just took off the sills to determine what kind of system was installed on my "new" (for me) GTS

Of course I did not do this without some rudimentary testing ( as per Burt Monroe)

As they say down-under...time for a barbe [image]

BAKED FOR AN HOUR FOIL SIDE DOWN [image]

FLIPPED IT OVER AND TOOK PICS....FOIL STILL STUCK REAL GOOD TO ICE CHOPPER (it's a Buffalo thing) [image]

The foil looks the same on both sides....shiny metal. I found the adhesive is flamable, but only when exposed to open flame...not heat. And the adhesive coating is not enough material to start a problem. Also, if the foil is installed on a surface...will not combust...only when directing an open flame directly against the unprotected adhesive backing...which never happens when installed on a surface.Notice the steel on the chopper has turned blue with the heat.
During all of these tests...I did not notice any excessive odor. [image]

Of course I will run the engine and pull the sill for inspection...and report to you.. and now the good news...I got fire insurance..[image]

Honestly, I just don't get it.

Why hasn't anybody simply attended to redesigning the whole of the sill panels yet? Why hasn't somebody recreated the sill panels with excellent free fresh air flow and great drainage? I would have thought that this easily dismounted parts would have been a high target for custom parts suppliers. Get the air moving...get the water out...lots of **** louvers....lots of front and rear mesh (yes I've seen the little mesh panel ready to flood the stock design with rain water with no place to go). Then, with lots of air moving we simply don't need to wrap and bind and tape and seal and hang.

I'm not trying to be a wise ass here, can somebody please tell me why this problem remains yet unsolved (past high flo cats..and the problem is done).

I'm gonna do this if'n no one stops me..I swear...cost? $160 each exchange(Canadian)
so much for the heat soak problem eh??? :D
