Is the IAC the same on the Gen I as it is on the Gen II? Never heard of anybody putting a Gen II manifold on a Gen I engine......................................

The part number for the IAC is

4778 637 92-98
4778 637AB 2000

so I would say yes. The part number for a dakota is different, even though they externally look the same and fit. But they don't work...

I double-checked the PCV valve, the IAC and the throttle cables and all were fine. I checked for vacuum leaks and could find none. As a last ditch effort I disconnected the battery for 10 minutes and voilá...problem solved. I guess the computer learned something it shouldn't have.

Side story: On a drive today a heater hose pops off the first time I get on it, which douses my VEC. After the group pulls over to see what all the commotion (read: smoke) was about, we use Dave6666's channel-locks to put the clamp back on and run to a liquor store to grab some water (thanks, Dave!). We refill my cooling system but the VEC is shorted out. The group takes off and I call my wife to bring me my tools and some canned air to blow the VEC out. She is 30 minutes away, but gets there fast and I get the car started, but it's doing the thing from Thursday. I disconnect the battery again and when I connect it the alarm is tripped. I don't have my fob (no use in locking a Gen. I) and have no way of disarming it. I call Tator and he suggests unplugging the alarm and remote modules but no-go. My wife (hereby nominated for wife of the year) runs home AGAIN and comes back with the fob to disarm the alarm. It does the goofy idling thing AGAIN so disconnect the battery and when it doesn't work, I head home. About 5 miles from home the car unlearns whatever was messing up the idle and it's fine...but only after the day is shot.

MY CAR IS RUNNING FINE NOW THOUGH. I think I'll stick to waxing instead of modding...SHEESH. And I thought women were tempermental!

I just sent you a PM, before reading this. Sorry to hear about the drive. Maybe it was a good thing I did not make the drive. I would not have had the heart to leave you by the side of the road. I hope you get everything worked out. Let me know if I can help.

Oh, it wasn't a big deal. As much as we like to all stand around and gab, the mishap happened within the first mile of the drive, so I knew everyone was chomping at the bit. There is no way I'd expect anyone to hang out for 3 hours while my wife ran back and forth. HOWEVER, a dude in a Viper could have covered the same ground in half the time...hmmmmm....

Anyway, it's all good. I missed the Salado drive last year because my car was down so I think it's bad luck.

OK it was my understanding that you were on your way home when we left and that you were behind us pulling out of the parking lot? Now I feel like an ass for leaving. You should of called me, I would have turned around and come back to help. I already had antifreeze on my hand after grabbing the heater hose to stick it back on when the hood was opened.

Dude don't lie! You didn't help with the hose, and that was not antifreeze, it was lemon limeade from Sonic. :D I'm sorry I missed you at the drive. Hows the card coming along? Even better question, how is the Viper running?

Well, I tried calling Jason SEVERAL times...and he might have tried to call all of us....but with the reception on that run i couldn't even make calls till we got to the Salado area. Jason, glad you got it back up and running. anytime folks modify their cars like that, you always have a few days of surprises...just the norm ;) Glad though that you are back up and running.

Justin and Mike, missed you guys. Had a good run with a bunch of Vipers and got to see the new 2010 Camaro SS test car with 422hp...not too shabby...

when I connect it the alarm is tripped. I don't have my fob (no use in locking a Gen. I) and have no way of disarming it.

Jason heres a little fix for you for the future. When I bought my 93 it came with two fobs and neither worked (and yes I tried programming them too). However I put my own alarm and remote starter in so it didn't matter much. The problem I had was my factory alarm would randomly arm itself for no reason and with no fobs had no way of disarming. So I have tech sheet on the wiring and the factory alarm CANNOT be removed. It has to stay but there is a disarm wire that goes to the brain. It is Light green with an orange stripe. I put a toggle switch with one end to ground and the other end to that light green wire and problem solved. Now if my factory alarm arms I just flip the switch on then off again and I'm on my way no fob needed. Noone will ever know its installed but you and it will save another head ache. total time for install about 15 mins. Hope this helps. JD:2tu:

I was going to try and run home but the car was idling erratically and backfiring constantly, so I shut it down and waited for the coolant to work it's way out of the VEC. Like I said, it wasn't a big deal. There is no way I would have expected anyone to wait the 3-4 hours I was in that parking lot.

I got a few calls but like Ryan said, the reception wasn't so hot on the drive. I tried calling him back once and between car noise, wind noise and terrible reception, I couldn't hear a thing. I got home eventually and the group got their drive. No worries!

That's a nice little trick! My fob barely works and the range is next to nothing, so that's a good idea. Thanks, JD!

Your welcome. The 15 min install time includes looking for a screw driver, electrical tape, getting the switch, and having a beer. Its so fast to do and you'll never worry about it again. The light green/orange wire is also 2 inches from a factory ground so no need to run any long wires. JD
