Had 00 GTS at a buddy's house. Went to start it up to leave and smelled smoke under the hood almost immediately. Battery light came on and power steering wouldnt work. Knew right off the bat that serpentine belt was lost. Just changed the oil about 200 miles ago and noticed a small nick in serpintine belt. Dont know how it happened but my guess is that the dealer nicked it with an oil filter wrench. Who knows? Anyway, the belt was still intact and on track but barely spinning. A piece was clearly shredded. Luckily I was at my friends house so I will get it towed to dealership tomorrow. My bet is that my hicktown dealer wont have a belt in stock, so if any of you can help me in locating one ASAP, I would be greatly appreciative.

I don't have a Viper yet, but I've read about two belts going in the past month. I think it might be worth it to stash an extra in the trunk on mine!

I will definitely be stashing one in the trunk for the future. Vipermed is overnighting me one thank god. Both local Dodge dealers in my area dont have one and said 2-4 days for delivery. Meanwhile my snake is at least safe at my buddy's house. Oh well, lovely xmas surprise.

Update for anyone interested. Serpentine belt broke due to faulty tensioner. Pulley tensioner lost spring pressure and belt loosened and got shreded. Dodge dealer said he has never seen one fail. Who knows. Anyone have this problem?

grayman,

I had that exact problem!! My tensioner pully melted and caused my belt to break. Was it a waranty item?
