How does a 3.42 or 3.54 Axle Ratio Effect Top Speed? (NT)

By my calculations, a 3.42 rear end will lose about 3 MPH top end, while a 3.54 will lose about 5 MPH. They take you further past the power peak in 5th gear, but not enough to shift profitably to 6th.

A Viper owner with an automatic transmission made up an interactive gear chart on the following site that is interesting to work with. Go to the site and click on the "Manual" button. That will fill in the actual ratios of the Viper 6x transmission. Then click on "SHOW GEAR CHART". The default is with stock 3.07 but you can change it easily and reload the chart.

ps & a little "fyi"..... Some of you may be sharp enough to question the 25.4" tire size because the number should be 26.2" if you use the sidewall info. The 25.4" number is correct. I asked John P about it and he said "tire manufactures perogative, they should spec higher, but most manufactures just widen the 315 35 mold, hence the less than calculated od. john"

Hey Marv:

You've provided a wealth of information that provides clear direction. Bragging rights indeed .... the shorter gears detract too much from the top speed, so more power under the hood is the right alternative for me.

I really like the fact that this vehicle can approach the 200 mph mark despite the fact that I'll probably never see it. I'll pick headers and a full 3" exhaust system instead.
