Lojack or Boomerang users - Chime in

In order to insure my 1997 GTS I am required by my insurance company in Canada to install a Boomerang Epsion Alert system ( LoJack in the U.S.).

I do not have my own garage. I am renting a very secure enclosed storage unit that I use as my garage. At this point, I do not have an electrical outlet to plug in a battery tender at this new facility. I won't have it for about a month. The owner of the building can't help me until a new panel is installed.

I am told this Boomerang/LoJack system puts a load on the battery, rumors have it that the battery will completely depleted within 1 week if a car with a Lojack system is not started during that time period. Others say you can run for weeks witout starting the car with no problems. Most data is hearsay from people who don't own the system.

Rather than rumor or LoJack marketing FAQ, for those who actually own this system and do not tender your battery, what have you found? What has been your experience?

Any help or suggestions are welcome.

I have never heard of anyone installing such an item on a Viper. Most of us don't let our cars out of sight unless they are tucked away in the garage. In the event that your car is stolen, you probably won't want it back because if it happens, some joyriding kids are going to wrap it around a tree. I guess my only semi-useful advice would be to try a different insurer.

I had a LoJack on one of my previous vehicles for 5 or 6 years without any battery drain issues.

For some strange reason I seem to remember the LoJack system is powered by it's own small battery. You would think it has to be to prevent the battery just being disconnected and turning the unit off. And the location of the lojack unit is hidden even from the owner. Might want to check with lojack, maybe there really is not a problem. If it IS connected to the battery you could have it installed and also install a battery cutoff switch which could be used short term till you get an outlet thus satisfying the insurance co. Although if for some reason it did get stolen during that period of time and was recovered and they noticed the cutoff you might not get paid. As the others say, simpler to change insurance companies. I posted this in case you can't for some reason.

Alex, I tried. None of the big insurance companies in Quebec insure cars that are imported from the US anymore. I used an insurance broker and Viper is on the list that requires a tracking system. I also didn't own a car for the last 6 years as I was saving up for the Viper and that didn't help my options or my insurance rates.
