A 97 with a stock oil pan should take only 8 quarts with a filter change. Don't forget that approximately 1 quart will stay in the oil cooler and will not drain completely. If it is over full, you should drain it down to the dip stick line.

The manual is wrong (are you sure it's a 1997 manual you are looking at?) - there was an addendum in 1996 showing that the actual oil capacity is 8.5 including the filter.... Gen 1 engines had the additional capacity. Then the Gen 2 oil pan was changed and capacity reduced. Then in 2000 the capacity increased to 10 quarts again... So its not you.... I'd drain at least a quart out - and recheck the level - the last thing you want is it over filled and sloshing up through the valve covers....

FYI - we looked at 3 different Owner's Manuals that we have and the 1997 manual shows 8.5 quarts. We also have 1996 manual that shows 7.5 quarts, and there is a third one (1996) upstairs that has the addendum for 8.5 quarts. There appears to have been several revisions....
