Oil Pressure Question.......................

Driving my son to school this morning (50 mph in 4th), I noticed that my oil pressure was just below 80 psi (in the 70-75 psi range). While the ambient temperature was 34 degrees, I had driven 10-15 miles and the engine had reached operating temperature. When stopped at a traffic light, I observed that the pressure dropped to approximately 45 psi.

In the past I've never noticed that the oil pressure was that high, except immediately upon start up.

Can oil pressure be too high? If so, why? Are there any internal seals which could be compromised as a result of excessive oil pressure?

Your thoughts................

70-75 appears to be normal in cruising conditions. At idle it will drop to the range you mentioned.

Same here. The only thing I have noticed is that the hot oil temp and pressure is about the same no matter what the weather is like (hot or cold). My Gen I would keep high oil pressure when it was cold out as the oil never got really hot. Using the radiator (as in the Gen III) to cool the oil seems to also heat the oil to a near steady 190-200 degrees. Only at the track have I witnessed the oil temp rising beyond the coolant temp.

Oil pressure sounds normal for a stock set up.

When I added the comp coupe oil pan and pickup, the oil pressure went up a bit at higher rpms to over 80 and went down a bit at idle to maybe 40 ish. This is with 15 w 50 Mobil 1 oil.
