Oil pressure?

I bought my Viper about 3 months ago so I'm still getting to know the engine, but lately my oil pressure has been acting strange. If I have to get on the brakes even more than a normal stop or sometimes while shifting my oil pressure drops to almost nothing and the check engine light comes on. If I have to slam on the brakes my oil pressure will drop to near 0, but the engine operates at it's normal rhythm. If I get back on the gas again or let it idle for a few seconds the oil pressure will climb back up to normal ranges. Has anyone else had this problem? Could it just be the oil pump or pan? I've checked the oil level and it seems to be normal.

Brandon,

I recomend taking the car to someone that know, DO NOT DRIVE IT. Between your idle problem and this, you are working your way to disaster. Idle is one thing, but lack of oil WILL destroy any motor and it sounds like something is wrong with yours.

Please explain to us exactly what you mean by normal oil pressure? And tell us something about the car, year/mods/miles/etc...

Brandon -- Check your oil level. I would imagine being 2-3 QUARTS low would cause this because of the location of the pickup.

i just noticed my car is doing this under hard breaking, but my pressure is only droping to about 20lbs, and is holding about 40-45lbs while driving, it is a 2000 rt. any advise as to what might be causing it, oil level is full.

Brandon,

Another option for you would be to upgrade your oil pressure gauge for one that is a lot more accurate.

The stock gauges on the GTS/RT10s are not very accurate.

These Autometer Ultra Lite gauges are just about the best:

http://www.autometer.com/cat_gaugedetail.aspx?gid=3131&sid=11

they make gauges for everything, fuel level, water temp, volt, etc.

The other recommendations in this thread are spot on too, be sure to look after you car.

At least you might want to:

1. Change the oil.
2. Look at the magnetic drain plug for metal filings.
3. Do an oil analysis.

Then it could be a bad transducer, connection or gauge

Make sure you have the right dipstick. Drain your oil, change the filter then carefully add in the correct amount for your year Viper. (What year is it?) Check the dipstick at that point and verify that it's correct. This sounds like low oil level to me.

www.blackstone-labs.com will send you a sample kit that you can fill and send back for analysis, which in this case I agree should be done.

The oil pressure gauge is really dampened so if your getting a response to braking regardless of the accuracy of the number, GTS Bruce is right.

Your car sure seems to be suffering from starvation due to low oil level... a dipstick check would be advised, or perhaps you have been checking it on a non-level surface, etc.

God I hate the Viper oiling systems. The number of oiling system related issues appears to be increasing throughout the boards.

Thats why I dont have one anymore. LOL
