I re-painted mine a matte black. Not flat and not gloss. The most important thing you must do is remove all the wax! I used a soft brush and dish soap on mine then ran them through the dish washer. (very clean)

Also be vey careful when you remove the screws, that they don't fall down inside the hood. A good fitting magnetic screwdriver is all you should need.

Hope this helps. Good luck. Steve

Bear in mind that matte black is flat black. There is flat, semi flat, semi gloss, and gloss black in spray cans. There is also a "Euro black" available at auto body supply shops that depending on how heavy a coat you apply...the more gloss you get. When you remove the grilles, you may find that after cleaning with grease and wax remover...that they look fine. I used a phillips screwdriver with a claw at the end to retain the screws. Sears sell 'em.
