Porter Cable, whats the big deal

Please explain to me why so many people love the Porter Cable. Is it just an issue of being easier to use than a traditional non orbital buffer?

I currently have a variable speed Dewalt polisher/buffer that I use. Same kind most body shops use. As most know, it works awesome but it does make a mess when you are polishing fine scratches out.

So is it worth it to buy a Porter Cable? Does the PC require less rpm to do the job? What are the advantages of the Porter Cable?

A PC is not for removing big defects and the like. It is best used for glazes, polishes, and waxes.

If I understand correctly, you are speaking of a rotary buffer. The problem with these is that without much care (and sometimes training) it is all too easy to burn through paint. Both a rotary and an orbital have a place in car care. (My rotary sees little use.)

The motions of a PC make it very safe, and I dare say it would be next to impossible to burn through paint with one. My PC has made my waxes tasks much more enjoyable, and does a much better job than a rotary for waxing, for example.

I use a 3M Hook-It plate and Meguiars' 6" pads with my PC. I use it to apply all my products, and I know that when I use it with ZAino, I get a much better finish than I did by hand. It also shaves lots of time off the job. The PC is a pleasure to use as it is lightweight, reasonably quiet and does not make the mess a rotary does.

In the end, I think you will find your self using the PC more and more while the rotary collects dust.

I mainly use my Dewalt after wet sanding or removing deep scratches etc. But I have also used it for buffing show vehicles but it is messy.

Sounds like the Porter Cable is the way to go then for polishing etc.

I guess I'll give it a shot.

Glad to help...good luck. you can try Lowes for a 7336 machine. PC makes a few units that look alike, but the counterwieghts differ and the 7336 is the best for what we do. Should be about $125.

I first starting using mine for Zaino since my '05 Excursion came home. Lots of real estate to care for and it makes the job almost a pleasure.
