I was following a friend in his SC GTS to a american car show yesterday when half way there about 80 mph on a downhill section his viper started to loose power and started spluttering, we pulled in and switched the engine off for about 5 mins then restarted and carried on to the show, everthing was ok. On the way back at the same section of road, this time uphill he kept the power down, I was following in another lane and watched his exhaust turn into a firework, spitting out bits of molten sparking metal that bounced down the road, I got on the walkie-takie instantly and we pulled over again. The drivers sill was smoking and we watched the paint bubble off (the size of a fist) by the silencer area. We left the engine and sill to cool, then restarted and allowed to idle for a while, a quick blip on the throttle spat out another hot chunk, we believe it was the baffle out of the silencer but he's looking at it this morning. We then pottered home at a respectable speed, the car ran fine just noisier. After thinking about, the guy reckons a military listening mast in very close proximatity may have caused some interference with his VEC2, and has wondered if anyone else had a similiar problem? (he's a none pc guy)

I've heard about 1 fellow Colorado Roe SC "burning out" some high flow cats, but I'm not certain exactly what "burning out" means... Also understand that car had been experimenting with different blends of octane and was also an early install with MSD box (but now upgraded to VEC2).

Since cats were also supposed to be from Roe, you might want to contact Sean directly.

Bob or George... Are you out there?

Sounds like the cat melted, I think the silencer is too far down stream and made of heavier material, so it would take enormous heat to make it self destruct>?

his stock cats 'burn't out' on the first run a few months ago, he's been running a full B&B system with no cats for a few weeks, it wasn't anything to do with the cats this time as there aren't any, he intends to phone Sean after our national holidays but just seeing if anyone has had a similar thing happen and have found a cure

we had the sill off this afternoon, the heat shield around the silencer area has gone, the B&B silencer is set a fair way down towards the back of the car, he took a couple of plugs out of the left bank just to visually check the weren't running to rich, they looked ok

Although the VEC2 itself is with-in a metal casing...being a non-metal body car, all those sensor wires to VEC2 will act as antenna and direct it straight in there!! In a metal body car, the body will shield it.

The OE ECU must be OK if yours didn't run odd?

***, I've had mail from Peter it seems we were on the same stretch of road where a couple of years ago, "BMW and Audi's
were cutting out for no reason"

Mine ran through both times fine and we both filled up at the same pump

That's a new one on me.
I told the guys in Sweden about it and they had not heard of anything like that either.
Let me know where the metal came from?
Meanwhile, avoid that section of road.

Regards,
Sean

I collected some 'samples' off the road after they had cooled down, which Phil now has. Forgot to mention on the first pass there were big flames out of the exhaust, just before it lost power. He's been getting the 1 second power loss as well for a couple of weeks, which I've experienced in the passenger seat, not nice espicially around corners under load
