What is the trick to getting the fastner loosened that attaches the top of the side sill to the front fender?

No fun so far.

No fun so far.

You can use a 10mm open end wrench and reach through the side vents to loosen them. You will probably find the front stud actually touches the inner fender liner. Make sure you place a loose lanyard from the wrench to your wrist, you'll probably drop it. You can get the rear one with a 10mm deep 1/4" drive socket quite easily.

If all else fails, you can pull the fender liner out and then loosen it. See my M&M Headers on a GenIII Install here

And once you do get it apart trim the inner fender liner just a tad to make it super simple the next time as shown in the above link.

And you're right, 1st time not so much fun. Make this simple mod your life is much better next time.

Good luck!

George.....you DON't have to make any cuts to the inner fender well! Just tape up a screw driver and carefully pry apart the fender well from the fender itself and then use a 10 mm deep well socket and loosen the nut. You don't have to take it all the way off as the side sill "slips on" to the bolt! This will save you from having a hole in your inner fender well!! The first time is a little tricky, but its really not too bad if you take your time and go gently!! Have fun.....!!!!

I found that removing the front tire and removing enough screws from the fender well to access the bolt was very simply and less time consuming than it may sound. I didn't want to take any chances bending or scratching the sill.

Yep, been there done that. Now I don't have to mess around, don't need to take anything off or even jack up the car. The slight elongation of the hole is insignificant, doesn't hurt a thing and allows for zero hassle access. While I wouldn't drill a hole in my hood, I have no issue elongating a slot in a place it can't be easily seen. I'm about less hassle. And when it comes to putting the side sill back on it's way easier.

Yep, been there done that too! No hassle at all with just pushing the inner fenderwell out of the way. My previous Viper had the "holes elongated" in the fender well and they allowed water and dirt into that opening. IMHO, if they (the holes) were there from the factory, they would already have been there. I just don't like to cut anything that doesn't have to be cut. My .02......thanks for listening to my rant.

I have at times drilled a 3/4" hole in the plastic with a step drill and then filled the hole after with a plastic plug that can be removed.
