I took my stock shifter out to take a close look at it and decide what I wanted to do for a replacement. However upon re-installation I realized that I could drop it as is by about 3/4 (guess, did not measure) inch by merely screwing it down further. For whatever reason on this car they had only put it on using only about 1/3 the available screw threaded shaft. So, if you still have a stock shifter; pull the boot down, loosen the locking nut, turn it all the way down, turn the shifter on the shaft until you bottom out, turn the shaft until you then align the shift pattern and retighten the locking nut.

Not near as good as a replacement, but you can shorten the height enough to be noticed as you drive the car. Best of all, it is quick to do and free.

And, its not too hard to simply shorten the shaft - take it off, cut it down 1.5 - 2 inches, then re-thread it. Works very well, and retains the stock look.

I still wonder why they raised the shifter height from the gen I's. After putting 70k miles on a Gen I, the shifter height on the Gen II that I replaced it with was just, well, puzzling.

I thought about cutting it down but decided against it, so far anyway. I will just replace it. Does anyone know how the ball portion comes off. I could not tell if it was threaded on or ? Did not want to force it off.
