My temp gauge is always pegged to the max when the car is on. Moves back to zero when the car is turned off fine, and vice versa. Bad thermostat? Where is it on the motor? Anything else it could be?

It wouldn't be the thermostat, my first guess is the temp. sending unit. Maybe just the wire fell off. A lot of these use a one wire system and if floating and not grounded (many sending units are just variable grounds) it will read full scale.

I just had the same thing happen to me. The temp sensor is on the top left side (facing forward) of the engine, just behind the power steering pump. You will need a 1" deep well socket to remove and replace. Just pull the electrical connector of first. Cost was about $45.00 at my local dealer.
