Temp guage goes into RED zone when key is on

My temp guage goes straight to 250 degrees [red zone] when I turn ignition on. 140 when ignition off .This is with a cold engine. Any ideas whats happening? Where to look???

The temp sending unit is most likely at fault.The sending unit is right behind the power steering pump on the drivers side of the engine at the front.There is a four wire connector.Unplug it and turn the key on if the gauge does not move that the sending unit is at fault.Call me if I can help.

Had the same thing happen a couple of weeks ago with my 98 R/T 10.

Just replaced the Temp sending unit, Cost about 60 Dollars at dealership now its good as new.
