What are the correct torque specs for Gen 2 engines ?
Service manual says -first :47NM(35ft.lbs)-second :turn 1/4 turn
After having a head gasket problem I asked DC(Germany)and they stated
that the torque numbers have been raised to 164NM(122ft.lbs).
So what is right?

From the manual for several years:

1998 first to 35 ft-lbs,then to 90 ft-lbs

2000 first to 35 ft-lbs, then to 90 ft-lbs

2002 first to 35 ft-lbs, then to 90 ft-lbs

NOTE above assumes multi-layer steel gasket, and following the proper sequence on bolts 1-12

HOPE that this helps...noting that there could be more recent info via a TSB, so HOPEFULLY, a REAL VIPER TECH will jump in here.

REMEMBER that a recent quote from Viper Wizard Chuck Tator was to answer the torque question on a GEN I...which, as you know, was an iron block...and the quote was " If your new gaskets are the "NEW" multi-layered steel gaskets, the torques are right for GENI's 40-80-120 ft lbs. "

Partial hijack. What do you do a gen 1 with multi-layer gaskets? Is the same as those wonderful paper ones? The book say's 35-95 but the book was written ten years ago (1995).

Glad that it's working for you, Peter.

My own interpretation of above data would have been to stop at 90 ft-lbs on Gen II blocks, and 120 ft-lbs on Gen I blocks using the multi-layered steel gaskets.

Chuck ?? Tom ?? Len?? Skip??
