Tubes and filters and air sucking noise

I'm sure this has been discussed here before, but apparently I missed it. Just installed smooth tubes and S&B hi flow air filters. Now, when I accelerate even slightly more than the typical grandmother, I hear a noticeable "squeal". I'm sure it's the increased air flow but is it supposed to squeal in a high pitched note? Is this normal?

Another local Viper owner tells me that his does the same thing. It's a little distracting. If this is normal than so be it. I'll live with it for the extra 10 hp. Any suggestions or is this just part of smooth tubes and filters?

Yup mine did it as soon as i got S&B filters (or K&N because I had them too but S&B is wayyyyyyy better) and smoothies.

I love the noise also kinda sounds like my cousins S/C on his mustang.

If your tubes are not rigid, the increased air velocity will decrease the relative pressure inside the hoses & cause them to pinch a little & whistle/squeal like you say at certain air velocities. I had rigid ones & removed them b/c the previous owner had nitrous nozzles ported. I ordered the smooth tubes from Archer & they sent me cheapo hose for too much money, & now mine squeals too. I hate it. You should be able to get some rigid hose from NAPA & re-couple it for considerably less tha what some of these board vendors charge.

If it's a whistling sound, one of your clamps is probably loose. If you think about how you whistle, you'll see it's the same effect under the hood.


I've had three Vipers with tubes and filters and other than the louder hissing noise through the NACA duct, no other high pitched sounds. Using S&Bs now..

Normal? Maybe, kinda. Tubes came from Roe. Clamps are tight, checked them again last night before taking it out. I'll re-check the fitment of the S&B's but I'm pretty sure they only go in one way.

One of the things I love about this car is all the sensory stimulation. The sounds, smell, feeling, visual impact. Let's take a total contrast like a Acura NSX, which is basically a race version of a Honda Accord. Great car, lots of respect for them, but tame, bland, controlled power. The Viper breathes heat all over you, makes growling and hissing (now) sounds, is total eye candy and has so much torque that I'm constantly monitoring the back end to make sure I've got traction. Some cars are like reading a book. The Viper is real world, right now, real time. Love it!

In my opinion, the whistling is the air squeezing around a partially opened throttle body butterfly, not the smooth tube or any leaking clamp. It occurs with all filters and hoses, you just can't hear it if you have the restrictive OEM filters. How do I know? The whistle occurs at slightly opened throttle not full open which is where any "pinching" would occur.... if there was any. I can say that because at 6,000 rpm on the dyno the typical smooth tube is as round as the day it was born.

I have cone filters into metal tubes and they whistle even more the the smoothies and S&B I had previously.

Beats me fellas. The only time I've had an actual whistle is when a clamp needed to be tightened or clamp/hose re-positioned.


As far as the theory of it goes, why would just adding tubes and filters suddenly create a throttle blade position (the position hasn't changed) induced high pitched whistle? - Especially if it's at idle when idle air is coming through the Idle Air device (IAC?) not through the TBs anyway?

Perhaps I stand corrected; I do, on the other hand, have a squeal (not a hiss)now that I didn't have with the rigid tubes.

MY ACR makes the same noise. Almost sounds like a quiet s/c whine.

Easy way to test Ron's theory. Take off the smooth tubes, and lightly apply the thottle. If you hear a whistle, he is right.

I 100% agree with Ron on the pinching issue. No pinching at any RPM. If they did, Sean would not sell them.

Mine does not make the sound by applying throttle; only under "load". (e.g not sitting in the driveway, but accelerating down the road)

When the car was stock there was no hissing/squealing noise at all. As soon as I put on the tubes and filters, it was there. On my car, here is where it comes:

Idle = none
very, very light acceleration = none
moderate to heavier acceleration = hear it
WOT = not sure, I'm just hanging on
with the car parked I can work the throttle from under the hood and DO hear it, (ie. no load to the wheels)

Does this mean I now have a poser SC?

I agree with the earlier "cost" issue on the tubes. I looked at them and thought, $65 for this? Now that's profit margin. Viper tax I guess.

When i added 70mm TB's it got ALOT louder not because of the TB's but the 3" Roe smoothies.

I really love it now, EVERYONE thinks its supercharged

Every car I've ever put high flow filters on has whistled like your car. It's normal.
