The last six digits on my 2009 Viper VIN is 500048. What do these numbers tell me about the build sequence? Is it the 48th built or what? Also is there a way of telling what date or month the car was built useing the entire VIN number? Thanks.

-As stated, the MonthDayHour is on the door sticker. But I think you're asking if you can get that from the VIN? Don't think so, maybe?

-The cars are not nescesarily built in sequential/numerical order, ie: one after another with 500048 following 500047, they may not roll off one after the other at the end of the line, but I bet they'd be close. At least that used to be true during the GenI and II days.

-Eg: my vin ends 0341, it's a March build date, they built like 2000 that year, so I doubt they'd only be on 341 by March. My brothers car, built the same day is 22 apart on the vin, according to the MDHs they rolled off within 4 hrs of each other, his at 8am mine at 12pm. (keep in mind they make maybe 8 or 10 a day, on average) If they were sequential, you could extrapolate that they may have made 40 or so that day, but that seems highly unlikely. I'd be willing to bet that they were only 2 or 3 (at most) apart at the end of the line.
Maybe someone has some more recent anecdotal evidence.

I know for 2008, the sequence wasn't that close. My car was built 2/1/08 and I was on the line watching it. My Vin is 200713. Right behind mine was 200088. So what does that tell you.

To answer your questions:

1. You cannot determine build sequence from the VIN.
2. The sticker on the door jam beneath the latch has the build date.

Interesting. Was that car also SSG? Maybe the VINs are assigned at some step in the order process? Who knows, someone must.

The warrantee build date of your VIN is 9/15/08 which would make it quite early in the 2009 build at CAAP.

2009 Build started on 9/3/08 so yours is about week 2. Figuring 8 cars a day you could say yours is in the first one hundred built.

Good info and thanks. The door sticker says manuf. 11/08. Weird, the same month my GTS was stolen!

Not to hijack the thread, but it's crazy that you had your GTS stolen. I would think that these cars are the least-stolen ones around. They attract so much attention that someone would have to have some serious b@lls to rip one off. Also, these aren't Honda Accords that can be turned into parts and sold in a split second - so either the thief was an inexperienced kid who went joyriding and now it's at the bottom of a lake, or a very savvy crook who shipped it overseas that same day...

To go with this subject then, do the VINs start back at zero at the begining of the new model year at least?

For example, if the Vin is 200,713, will the next year start back at 200,000?? Basically the last car built would show how many total were built that year?

Not necessarily... but for Viper which is a bit of a special case... the last five digits have started at 00001 since at least 2003. the first several dozen VINs are almost always engineering cars, and get crushed rather than sold. But there are exceptions where if the cars have significant "carry-over" content (like 2006 from 2005) and are fully updated with all production parts they occasionally get sold via dealer auctions.

The sixth digit is stranger...

2009 started with 9V5XXXXX
2008 started with 8V2XXXXX

It is part of the "sequence number" of the VIN but is assigned somewhat arbitrarily each year.

The VIN sequence number is not the same as build sequence number. That can be due to part availability, or simply building enough cars in a row to fill a transporter for a given region.
